Outrigger recommendations

OK, all you bluewater addicts, I need some outrigger recommendations for the new rig. Likely to be side mounted, although T-toppers are a possibility given the sturdy hardtop it will have. Telescopic may be best for me, as i may be needing to get them out of the way for conventional fishing without pulling the boat out of the water. Think camped on the beach at Ningaloo for 6 weeks and not using the outriggers every day , but not wanting to have to remove them from the boat. 4.5 metrs should be long enough, only want to use single rigs, and tag lines preferred.

I went for 2-piece Reelax 4.5m

Mon, 2018-01-01 18:37

They're 2-piece gunnel mounted running the spears and stingers
They're very good outriggers; very stiff which is what you ideally want
I'm not fully up to speed on the telescopic ones and whether they've improved
Steve Marwick (ex Bluewater Tackle) installed mine on my Haines Hunter 800 Patriot; very happy with them.
Mine have their own storage bag, and are easily removed whilst on the boat or at the ramp; simply bolt together with a stainless wing nut.
Here is an article by Peter Pakula on Outriggers:
www.pakula.com.au/index.php/2014-09-23-04-02-2/2014-09-23-04-02-4/small-boat-outriggers
I also have a set of Rod Riggers, which I haven't tried out yet, but at least they give you a better lure spread as cimpared to jsut running in the rod holders, without the bulk with the outriggers.

Precision

Mon, 2018-01-01 19:10

I went with the precision carbon fibre poles. http://precisionrods.com.au/products/out-riggers/

Had the 4.5m reelax but find the precision much stiffer.

Havent had much experience with telescopic. Seems to be popular in the states of a t top

Is it a limited budget? If I really wanted telescopic I would only ever go with the gemlux.

Not really a limited budget.

Not unlimited, but I want to do everything on this boat right, and once.

Pay attention to the mounting setup

I’ve seen some gunwale mounts that are pretty flimsy and the gunwales lacked enough reinforcement.

General opinion would suggest that telescopic riggers are not as rigid as non telescopics.   Similarly the consensus of opinion would recommend the stiffer the riggers you get the better.  You can use back stays to stiffen soft riggers but given you haven't purchased yet the better option imo would be to purchase the stiffest riggers and manage their removal / storage on the boat.

 I’m running the solas

Tue, 2018-01-02 04:56

I’m running the solas carbons at the moment and they have been surprisingly good for the money. Been loaded right up towing big blue lures and they handled it fine. The new rig will have precision’s with wishbone bases though.

I'm no big bluewater fisherman...

To give me an improved spread and keep it as flexible as possible I will be using these in the existing tipper mounts/rod holders.

I understand these won't provide any of the lift benifits (rocket launcher on hardtop for that) but they increase my spread by 150% for less than $150.

2 rods in these mid ship, 2 (or more) on the roof mounted rocket launcher for extra height and upto 3 across the rear!

I've come so close to buying these.

For my current boat and the previous one. always held off. But they can certainly help. we often had problems with the larger skipping gar digging in, run off the rod tip, I reckon that extra bit of lift would have been enough.

Ok, after much research, bit the bullet

Tue, 2018-03-06 09:30

Did a lot of looking , and pricing, and research, much of it on THT. These blokes all seem to run outriggers, and a lot of them on T-tops or hardtops. Consensus is that you can't go past the Rupp Revolutions. Not cheap. I did look at the Taco 280's, but don't like the alloy construction. I referred to a Matt Watson (Ultimate Fishing ) video in the build thread where he was deploying the riggers on his new boat, and was taken by the utter simplicity of it. Turns out that the bases were Rupp revolution, and only the poles were ReelRods kiwi made. www.youtube.com/watch  I also bought telescopic aluminium Tigress poles to go with it.
