Over Nighter At Wilbinga
Submitted by metroLBfisher on Thu, 2012-02-16 19:15
Planning on doing an overnighter soon up to wilbinga
I have a Nissan Patrol which is perfect for 4wd but im not too experienced with the soft sand.
Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of where to take off from Read on the forum that Two rocks has a spot where you let down your tyres? if anyone knows that would be much appreciated :)
As i dont have anything to let down my tyres or pump them up again.
And was wondering if there is any weed around atm?
Cheers would be much appreciated if anyone could help
really dont feel like losing my 4wd and hopefully get into some decent fish

Plenty of weed around up
Plenty of weed around up there because of the number or reefs around but has been a few good tailor around in the mornings if you pick the right spot. If you stick to the track that runs parallel with the beach it is fairly hard and you don't need to worry about the soft sand so much. There is a spot to let Tyres down at the 2 rocks enterence or at the wilbinga grove carpark but nowhere to pump them back up.
always looking for a new challenge!!

beg , borrow or steal, opps not steal.
You can make it all thru that area without letting your tyres down , but that doesnt mean
you should. Far easier on the track and your car , with tyres down to 20psi.
If I had a spare compressor, Id lend it to ya mate, but i dont.
You are going to need one anyway so start saving, My latest one is a abr sidewinder
look it up , about 200 bucks , great unit for the cash.
And tailor are around , I have been using little scalies from coogee, and getting some around 50cm.
Some reefs and areas can suffer from weed , but some always seem cleaner, that is what you are
going exploring for , to find out about the area , good luck ,

cheers for the info maybe
cheers for the info maybe wilbinga isnt the appropriate place. i should probably get my self a compressor before trying anything like that i have been through some pretty soft sand, without to much hassle but bit rough on the patrol.
I was more looking at targetting sharks and mulloway with some deep gutters is there any where up that way that has that sort of terrain?
mate has some of those 4wd track things that might be worth grabbing before doing anything to insane

You need a twoway cb [Channel 20 up there], Cos the boys from the shacks will help you out
But no safty gear thay will not help you, And some stroms plus a air pump
Mobile are not to good up there

Whats it like up there getting to the beach from waneroo rd is it hard to find and im thinking of just sticking to the tracks and maybe walking down to the beach keen on kayaking some baits out for sharks as i havnt had any luck after spending so much time in the metro area!
I actually do have a hand held Cb radio that might be worth taking up if worst comes to worst, appreciate the info

I have been up there several
I have been up there several times in my GUII Patrol. But rarely gone on the actual beach (unless I am with others). Wouldn't even look at the beach without tyres let down. Very soft sand.
But most tracks jsut behind the dunes are fairly hard. I would still recomend getting a compressor. Much more pleasant ride with the tyres down a bit. Especially if you coming from Wanneroo road up to the shacks. The corrugated track will shake the car to bits if tyres full up.
Once you get north of the reefy areas, there are plenty of gutters etc for mulloway & sharks.
Just dont leave any rubbish.

A lesson learned
You young buggers chose not to head the warnings of the older farts here. At least you know now and will spend some time preparing for a much more enjoyable experience next time. One key aspect up there is to not take risks if you don't have a support vehicle. The sand up there changes from hard sand to impossible soft sand for no apparant reason. All of a sudden you find yourself heading to the water and there is no going back. That can be scarey and end up an expensive exercise.
People talk about tyres at 20psi. I still think that is too hard. I much prefer to run at 15psi and I rarely have too much trouble these days. Addmittedly I know the area well and I know the capabilities of my vehicle and myself.
Don't be put off by the experience. It happens to us all. Just be careful and you will have plenty of good trips out.

as above
Your completely right un cut trigger, only mentioned 20 psi in my earlier post , as he is a young , un exp
bloke , with no compressor.
At 20 he could slowly make it back to somewhere for his tyre pumping , if he used extreme caution. My self , being sand and beach driving very regularly since the mid 80,s , I use 10-15 pretty well everywhere.
had suzukis, miti L200, dihat rocky diesel, v6 jackeroo , v8 landcruiser and gq patrol, all with steel rims
allways used 10-15 and never had a problem, indeed places like wagoe, bremer beachs , greenough
,borholm and others you would be mad not to use 10psi as your startn point.
Carry a good compressor, never think its too much trouble to drop your tyres, carry you basic recovery gear
and fish with others if possible , and you will have good chance of enjoying your beach fishing
and learning to drive the sand with confidence.

thanks for the run down guys
thanks for the run down guys as you say definately learnt my lesson just lucky i had people i could call an come help. i was originally going to go to wilbinga and specifically went to pipidinny thinking that the sand wasnt bad there and i wasnt going to have much trouble but jeez i was wrong. Yeah uncle is into 4wd and has been for years so he is sending me a link with a few bits and peices i need to buy that will pretty much make it almost impossible for me to get bogged.
I had planned on going with a second 4wd but unfortunately at the last minute they bailed out so wasnt going to miss out on an oppurtunity to go fishing but
now if i dont have someone else i simply wont be going

No such thing as impossible to get bogged LOL
It can happen to all of us and at anytime really. It's about how much of a hurry we are in to wet a line. I only carry a strap, a very good compressor so I can let my tyres down to basically fugg all if I need to and I always carry a shovel. 9 times out of 10 the vehicle will bogg because of too much tork and too much pressure in the tyres. If you have diff lockers then it's just a matter of crawling out.

it all comes down to
it all comes down to experience.(you know how, to get bogged that is
). even the best of 4x4s will get stuck with the wrong approach to driving on soft sand.
the more you get out there and do the beech driving the better you will become, not saying you wont get bogged after years of experience , just less frequent and not as bad. going out on your own isnt that bad as long as you know what your capabilities and your vehicle capabilities you will or should be fine. just take your time and learn to read the beech.the more you pannick when your starting to bogg down the worse it will get.if you do bogg down , dont put your foot on the gas too much as it will lead to a nice deep hole under the wheels
