Penguin Phantom Steering

Gday folks, I have an 18' Penguin Phantom that needs the steering replaced, basically everything from the steering wheel back, even the unit the steering wheel attaches to is siezed , The cable and assembly looks to be the original equipment fitted when the boat was manufactured (kiekhaufer Mercury on the helm unit) ,does anyone know if the quick fit kits available are a suitable replacement.

If you are interested, I

If you are interested, I fitted a "No feed back" helm as a replacement in my boat. Uses the quick fit cable, but the helm is a higher ratio 4-1 and has a brake/clutch fitted into it.

As soon as you finish making course adjustments the brake comes on and there is no "load" back on the driver. You can sit there "hands off" the wheel until you need to make a correction.

The helm doesnt cost that much more, it isnt stocked by the chandlers, but is in the suppliers warehouse. I can give more info if you want it.

Will it fit your boat, don't know, probably.

I should have said in my first post, the boat is a project restoration on limited funds (what the wife will let me spend) the hull is in good shape only some minor glass repairs, but the steering and wiring is shot. Steering took all my strength to turn ,when i got the cable, bezel and helm out the shaft through the bezel would only turn with the aid af a 12" shifter, same with the helm and the cable takes me and my son to move it .replacing the system seems to be the best answer, what im after is to buy a kit that has all the parts except for the Wheel and push /pull rod that bolts to the rod attached to the cable that runs through the tilt tube

Hydraulic is the way to go

Mon, 2012-01-02 09:03

Hydraulic is the way to go ..... if you can afford it. A one off cost of $2000, sweet. But if you're on a limited budget, and have other costs as well. In other words a project boat, then compromise may be nessesary. The standard el-cheapo helm sold in the shops has a ratio of about 3 to 1, hydraulic is about 5 or 6 to 1. The helm I fitted is 4 to 1 and is good with the bigger boat. My all up cost was about $500 and that included a nes wheel 15 inch.

The cable will probably sieze over time especially if the boat is left un-used. But a new cable is a small expense and easy to fit. Later down the track a hydraulic system could be fitted.

Safetyman if you are south of the river, my boat is at home and you can see for yourself.

You are correct, just looked at the reply above, thought $200 was a bit cheap and had left off a zero. Correction Whitworth hydraulic helm kit $969.
