Perspective - Fish Imports

Coles and Woolies will of course have this nicely presented on ice, with all the other fish varieties..............priced at $7 or $8 kilo. Made to appear pretty reasonable against the other fresh stuff at anything up to $25 kilo.

Not just Basa
Its not just basa and the others mentioned, try barra and prawns as well.
Catfish are wild caught in Lake Argyle and marketed as silver cobbler, at least they are not farmed in sewerage ponds like the imported garbage.

shithouse
i worked at a restaurant doing pizzas for a while (a while back) and ol mate owner was flogging basa as fish of the day "barramundi" for the whole time i was there.
i warned him (late in my time there) that if any customer or food inspector came through and asked to look in his freezer he would be shot.
at the end of the day people are willing to save a buck and think "fresh fish, imported too, this must be good" without doing any research into country of origin etc are going to force up prices of locally sourced seafood and line the pockets of the big two.
i point blank refuse to eat any imported food in support of our farmers/pro fishos

Yeah your right Barlow. If
Yeah your right Barlow. If its cheap fish its because its turd fish. I hope they don't disguise this fish to often I would hate to think I have eaten this but I had seen a documentary on the Mekong barra a while ago and always stay away from imported fish. Actually I only eat fish when I catch it so I'm safe but I'm sure a few people will be surprised and disgusted with that Adam

Scenarios like Barlows is one
Scenarios like Barlows is one of the reasons why i havent ordered fish to eat ANYWHERE in WA since 1997, Restaurants or Fish and Chip places.
With the one exception of Sardines(Mullies) at Cicerellos in Freo. Pretty hard to disguise them with something else :P
My missus and her family often like to order fish at restaurants, and i'll always have a look/taste to tell them if its what they ordered or not(if its a know fish to me).
One of my poor mates once got a piece of Whaler and Port Jackson Shark when he ordered a couple of pieces of 'fish' from a Fish and Chip Store. Yes in my very very younger years my family once kept a Port Jackson to see what it tasted like, burnt in my memory forever had bad they taste.

what also shits me is
what also shits me is restaurants saying they use WA Tiger/King/Endeavour/Banana prawns when theya re just using the Vennamai ones from Asia, all prepared and either reheated or cooking the raw ones, it's not hard to taste the difference, they are not very sweet at all!

Yuk!
I ordered a "rankin cod" fillet at an expensive seafood restuarant. Coming from Karratha I know what that tasted like, and looked forward to a nice piece again. Well it wasnt and I complained and asked to be shown the uncooked fillet, because I could tell from that. They refused but offered my money back. God knows what it was, and also how many paid for it, only to be served "crap".
Wont go there again.

last year Red Rooster had a TV promotion of (from memory) "Wild Aussie Barra burgers".
Not long afterwards the Northern commercial fishermans group came out publicly and asked where they were sourcing it, because none of their members were supplying them.
Turned out to be Nile Perch.
New Zealand has very good aquaculture setups, but as Brucesta says above, its easy to taste (or otherwise) the Asian farm prawns.
