Perth Road Rage

OK, Im quite reluctant to post this as im sure im going to get bagged for stating the obvious and for stirring the pot.  I never thought Perth has the worst drivers after driving all over Aus, Travelling through Indonesia, Road tripping in Canada I have seen bad driving everywhere.  Lately things have been totally over the top.

My work commute of 40mins each way each day is my most hated part of every day.  I get mad all the time with poor drivers but have never wanted to jump out and kill someone over something on the road.  A few weeks back on a monday at 7:20am William St, crossing Albany Hwy at the lights onto the Kenwick link in the left lane, a 4wd in the far right hand lane is stopped and a motorbike comes up between the traffic and pulls up in front of 4wd.  I notice guy in 4wd getting out, hes an old fella and he has this sort of stick about 45cm long with a handle.  His missus is now agitated in car and is frantically trying to open the door, old fella limps up to this bloke on motorbike and before I knew it he has stabbed this stick thing into the motorcyclists back yelling about 'people like him causing accidents'.  Motorcyclist is recovering from unexpected blow to the kidney/spine and trying to get off bike, im bailing from my 4wd, old fellas missus is trying to get between.  Old fella open hand slaps this dude on the helmet, motorcyclists head is rocking around and hes trying not to fall off, im yelling at the old fella to calm down trying to move between the cars between me and the incident, others are getting out and yelling, old fellas misses is yelling and dragging him back by one arm.  Motorcyclist is now off his bike and he looks around 6'3 and really pissed off, hes gone chest to chest with the old dude looking like its really going to tee off.  By this stage im right there beside them trying to tell them to just calm down, telling the old bloke no matter what happened, he has no right to assault someone in the street, his missus is trying to drag him off and the motorcyclist who looks like hes dressed in just plain work clothes turns around and walks away, old fella kinda limps back to his car and his missus has to help him in. Lights are changing, I jump back in and take off hoping old fella does not just run the motorcyclist over as the lights go green.

Everyday I see heaps of dodgy driving and once again today I was coming home on William Street crossing the train lines where it merges from two lanes to one.  Im in the right hand lane stopped several cars back from the crossing, boom gates go up and both lanes take off.  Im following the car in front, the vehicle in the left hand lane turns off left and im looking in the mirror, its clear, white lines are stopping so im merging.  All of the sudden a white commodore station wagon is at my left rear going fast, Im already indicating and there was no more road with a roadside parking bay rapidly approaching for him or into the median strip if he doesnt concede.  He is nearly up to my left passenger window and im wondering if I should just stop and let him run up onto the kerb and back onto the road... In the end he drops off while screaming abuse across through my passenger window with kids watching him from the back seat and female passenger.  He is now riding right up my arse with clearly no hands on the wheel as they are on his face being used to make glasses while waving his head around screaming.  There is a roundabout ahead and there are 3-4 cars ahead slowing as they get to the intersection.  He is still screaming now with his head out the window yelling 'I know where you f!@#@#@! live c@#$ im gonna come round and get you' while giving me the finger.  Thankfully the traffic cleared the roundabout without having to come to a stop and he tailgated me then turned left onto the roundabout. Leaving me to consider how I was possibly in the wrong for being the front vehicle, by nearly a length and a half when the white lines were ending in a merging situation.

I am not a slow driver, I drive quickly and efficiently within the limits but I dont tailgate and I dont threaten people.

I have to drive around Perth

Thu, 2014-02-27 19:15

I have to drive around Perth all day every day doing different plumbing jobs. Traffic out there is just feral, and getting worse by the day, seems people either drive way too slow or they are crazy and erratic. Can't wait to move to the country to get away from it, just waiting to finish my apprenticeship and I'm outta here

following a Harley down the road a while back and the car in the next lane flicks a ciggy butt out of his car and hits the Harley rider fair in the face I could see the sparks from the ciggy , Harley rider speeds up and kicked his wing mirror off at the next set of lights. the Harley rider gets off his bike and tries to open the ciggy flickers door but he has locked himself in. ended up he booted his door in , just my opinion but I think the car driver got what he deserved

it's very simple,
get a car cam..... front and rear. very cheap. record everything.

Send every major incident to the police with an associated hoon report.

After witnessing things like you described over and over I now believe all vehicles should be fitted with one mandatory.

Thu, 2014-02-27 20:14

I only just got my P plates and the amount of people that tail gate and tell me to get out of the right hand lane when im turning right when i am doing the speed limit is incredible. The worst one is going off canning highway down free way south- cant go from 60 - 100 until after the sign saying start of freeway. theres been police there pinging people before so with 4 demerit points im not taking the chance. people try to burn me off where there is no room and almost causing accidents is just plain stupid. Some people have no patience

perth drivers are the worst (at least they are very very  bad) it's unfortunate we cant report someone for being a twat, having said that if we could the courts would be full of people being charged with being a twat!  it's a pity dash cams cant be the only evidence needed to convict someone, all you can do is do whats right ie try to diffuse the situation.......the others are just twats...sorry I've  had a few tonoight!

Thu, 2014-02-27 21:04

Fishy fingers are you telling me that the law can't or won't take action against some one on the strength of dash cam film alone plus a statement from the driver. If that's the case then no wonder we have so many bad drivers, what does the normal citizen have to do to get these fools of the road.

Thu, 2014-02-27 21:42

Ah the joys of a small country cop that knows who you are & what your about. Got my licence in similar fashion except the copper stood out front, watched me drive down the road, do a u turn then reverse into the station driveway. Job done. He knew me though & knew I'd been driving on the farm for years. Different story in the city though, self important people that have hardly ever driven being taught by parents that are useless drivers themselves & then given a sub standard test by people that are more interested in money than safety. There will always be tossers but I reckon teaching people to drive properly would go a long way to helping with the problem.

Thu, 2014-02-27 22:09

I agree 110% I'm on the road often for work going from job to job and perth is going to the dogs!! IMO traffic cops have their head up their ass trying to catch people at the top or bottom of hills in order to get their quota. What they need to do is put bums on seats in unmarked cars targeting these friggin psychos out there.

Speed cameras don't catch  tailgating, cutting off,  or the lane ducking and diving that occurs everywhere and often. They need to put the revenue from some of these fixed cameras into putting cops on the road to target this crap. Only a matter of time before someone is killed if things don't turn around

Drive for 2hrs and 15 mins every weekday to work and back.

I have a Chevron vehicle that monitors everything - harsh braking, acceleration, overspeed etc. So no matter what, I have to drive carefully, because it's all being monitored.

The amount of accidents and deaths lately on the road in Henderson is unbelievable.

Russell Rd, 0630 in the morning coming off the freeway, everybody races each other, aggro, ignorant trucks, it has the works. Unfortunately, I sit back and keep counting the accidents !!

I avoid going up to Perth in peek hour at all costs! I haven't driven in other states too much, but I think Perth/WA drivers are defiantly earning their reputation. My personal favorite is when people get pissed off at me in heavy traffic because I leave an appropriate gap between me and the vehical in front.

Fri, 2014-02-28 08:40

And totally agree with the "gap". I leave at least a 4 car gap. But that appears to be an invite for others to fill the gap, and then when you drop back the arse*oles behind push right up my tail. I drive from Bouvard to Rockingham everyday, and almost lost the plot one day myself. Stupid women in a white Tarago tailgated me so close for 30minutes that I couldnt see her headlights. I drive with cruise control on open roads, and it is set just over the limit () so its not like I am going very slow (used to race Rally cars). Slowing down as I often do with tailgaiters made matters worst and she got irrate. I was just about to climb out at the Ennis Avenue/Elanora light when HaHa - an unmarked Cop car pulled up beside her and gave her a tongueful about tailgating. The last I saw her was 10 car gap back. Why they didnt pull her over I have no idea because that gap and her flailing arms is not safe driving.

I spent 8 years up north and had become a very relaxed driver....

Back in Perth now for 2 years and I'm still blown away by the amount of idiots on the road...And after driving in Melbourne for a few days a while back, I'd have to agreee, Perth drivers are terrible!! Impatient, selfish and think that it's their god given right to speed and tailgate you in the right hand lane for doing the speed limit or even 5k's over.

Do WA drivers know that the right lane is for overtaking, not just another lane to sit in because I'm doing 100kph.

I don't agree with tail gateing - but I can certainly see people's frustration.

I passed an L plater on the freeway yesterday, I was in the left lane - guess where he was ?

Too right!

Fortunately for me country driving is pretty relaxed, everyone here knows what the outside lane is for but come this long weekend another reminder of the Perth phuckwits holding up both lanes going under the speed limit & the other's tailgating to get past.... common sense will not prevail.

The rest of the country drives far better than Perth, shit go abroad & try sitting in the outside lane of the autobahn

YES video from a dash cam and a "hoon" statement is enough to CHARGE AND CONVICT a dangerous driver.
I'm not talking about an idiot who is tailgaiting but someone who is driving extremely aggressively, dangerously, yelling abuse and threats etc.

have just been through this.
(someone who intentionally endangers my life and my childs life cos they cant control themselves is going to have the cops knocking on their door and me pushing the issue the whole way in court.)

Very satisfactory getting someone off the road for a while and being fined a couple of $K.

but I think you would still have to go court to convict even if its just a case of tailgating or just being a dick head on the road

However I do stand to be corrected although you hear it all the time people report bad behaviour and are told if your not willing to go to court they cant do anything.

I was driving to the airport

Fri, 2014-02-28 10:53

I was driving to the airport last week at lunch time, heading up the freeway and the traffic is down to a crawl, no prang, no break  down and still the traffic couldn't flow. I blame the drivers, the ones who can't merge and the ones who can't use the lanes as they are meant to be used. And the biggest problem is the truck drivers. Why can't they just stay in the left lane? Worst ones are the truck drivers who try to overtake another vehicle that's doing 99 kmh and their truck is limited at 100 kmh, but the morons pull out and use about 2 or 3 ks to complete the manoeuvre. Should have their licenses revoked. And yes, a dash mounted camera is going in my next vehicle.

cheers

Dale

Drive from Pt Kennedy to the airport for work. When I started just over 3 years ago it took me 45-50 mins, now takes about 70 mins unless it's Sunday morning. The main problem is never ending roadworks and arseholes sitting in the right hand lane just under the speed limit and when you eventually get to pass them there they are gabbin away on their phones and completely oblivious to the pile of cars trying to get around them. I suppose their just lucky I don't own a 60 series with a kick arse roo bar.

seems no one thought the motor bike rider was out of line by pulling in front of the old guy at the lights ?
not condoning the old guys attack on him, but jeez iv lost count of the times iv had a motor bike do that at the lights, just cruise up in the middle of a line of cars, stopped at a red light and pull over in front of me blocking me at the lights, out passed the white stop line

if i was in a police car im sure they would not do it , so why do they think its fine any other time ?
even had it happen with L plates up on the car , ?
cyclists are nearly as bad , imho if they want road usage the same as cars, pay a licence & rego as well as a road tax , many of them are plain dangerous mixed in on busy roads, they can identify you , but you cant identify them if you needed to in relation to an acident or incident on the road

Cyclists= speed humps

The amount of times when driving a cray truck through the city that one had to slam on the anchors to avoid running over bloody cyclists because they have the idea that they can do as they please.
If they are doing it for exercise then why are they wearing low wind resistant lycra, riding head down for less drag and on bikes that weigh about as much as a good fart and have 20 something gears.

They should be riding upright, in wet weather gear and on something that weighs 50 kgs and has a fixed wheel with no brakes

Hezzy, thats because in good ol WA this is actually completely legal

and in regards to blocking you at the lights, what sort of heavy right foot do you have? Id be very suprised if any motorbike are actually blocking you when the lights go green.

 It's legal for the motorbike

Fri, 2014-02-28 15:29

It's legal for the motorbike rider to go up through the middle of the traffic but they are not supposed to go out past the white line. If you had one pull ACROSS in front of you then you should consider yourself unlucky & the rider should know better. That's different to one that has just pulled out past the end of your bonnet but has stayed pretty much in the middle of the cars. The reason they pull so far forward is so you can clearly see they are there rather than sitting beside you & risk getting hit. I've got not problem with them doing it so long as they pull up where they can be seen clearly. The only time I get the shits with them is when you get that odd one that comes up the middle then when the lights turn green they dawdle off slower than you would have otherwise taken off. It also annoys me when I leave a bit extra gap because I'm behind a motorcyclist & the person behind me gets the shits because I'm not pushing them up the road. Sorry to whoever is behind me but if that rider comes down I don't want to hit them, they've got next to nothing to protect them. Road rage & general stupidity on the roads isn't confined to truck drivers, car drivers or whoever else, like everything else in life some people are just stupid or don't know any better. The ones that don't know any better we should try to educate, the ones that are stupid..... natural selection maybe? I'll bet half the people replying in this thread are lousy drivers (yes maybe I am to) but I'll bet they probably don't realise it & if they do would never admit it & I'll bet you sure as hell couldn't tell them what they are doing is wrong & how to correct it without them flying off the handle.

Mon, 2014-03-03 11:27

Interesting...now I am not one of those lycra clad maniacs that blur along at a million miles an hour but do ride my bike often and often have to use the road to get to where I am going (not roads like Wanneroo rd or whatever....thats nuts! I will use bike paths where I can btw) but seeing as I already pay insurance, rego, taxes etc on two cars then why should I be paying additional taxes on an activity that by and large has a positive effect in regards reduced impacts on road wear and tear, congestion and so forth then personal benefits such as fitness, reduced costs on fuel, maintenance etc.?

Don't get me wrong, I have seen plenty of cyclists out there that are just plain stupid, ignorant and belligerent when on the roads ( try getting through the city during peak hours with the road racers about...)but it goes both ways. Seen a few frightening interactions between cars and cyclists because of aggressive and impatient car drivers...guess who is going to come off better in an interaction? There just needs to be mutual respect between bike riders and other users.

Do you pay rego on your bike? Do you pay insurance on your bike? What you pay for your cars has nothing at all to do with you riding your bike. If it did then by your own logic I should be able to ride my skateboard down the road or a shopping trolley if I wish.  Maybe I shouldn't pay for my marron licence because I already pay for my freshwater fishing licence? Sensible cyclists are few & far between unfortunately. It seems the helmet goes on & the brain switches off.

Lack of sensibility also

Tue, 2014-03-04 18:27

Lack of sensibility also applies to an awful lot of motorists as well mate (as witnessed daily and whats been written in this thread), its just not cyclists doing stupid stuff. Like i said before, there needs to be respect between road users, cyclists (even those lycra clad knob ends) and motorists alike with not one form of transport thinking that they own the road. The aggro from both sides is totally unnecessary.

Personally I don't see how rego will do anything in regards to cyclists bad behaviour and better interaction between bike riders and car drivers other than be a massive loss making excersise as the administrative costs would outweigh the income from registration.  Shit bike riders could be identified but I dunno... do you think the cops would give a rats arse over one cyclist running a red light? You can identify car drivers via their rego number tailgating, speeding, failing to indicate but how many people actually ring up the cops up and make a report and for that fact follow it up? Would imposing costs on bike riding force plenty more people back into their cars and add to the already crapola congestion that everyone is fed up with?

If it could be made practical and workable, great but I don't see it.

Tue, 2014-03-04 20:51

I never said it was just the cyclists Justin, read what I wrote 5 posts above this one. Cyclists know they can't be identified making them pretty much immune to prosecution & they play on it. Not all of them but most of them. Motorcross bikes cannot be registered for road use but can be registered for offroad use in certain areas. The serial number on the bike is recorded (helps locate stolen bikes to) & you are issued with a number plate, this is at a cost of $6.50 per year. Absolutely no reason the same system can't be employed for bicycles, just with smaller number plates. Police target areas that dirt bike riders are known to frequent, get caught in the wrong place with an unregistered bike & it'll set you back about $300 & your bike gets confiscated for about two weeks. That's for a first offence. If that's the cost for dirt bikes that are out in the boonies there's no reason why the same system can't be applied to cyclist that are in the city.

I fully agree with you that more respect & tolerance from all road users is key & that the agro isn't needed. It just seems we have different views about this one aspect of how to achieve it.

This weeks forehead slapper was the driving instructor (Best West I think was their name) that stopped in the westbound right hand lane of Safety Road to let a pedestrian cross the road (no right of way), the f'ing Richard Cranium! There is no hope if people like this are teaching others to drive!

I do a lot of driving on the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeways and implore people to please follow one simple rule:

LEAVE A LOT OF ROOM BETWEEN YOUR VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU.

- this will allow people to change lanes and merge easily. Having a car change lanes in front of you does not mean you will get to your destination slower, unless you are not providing enough space and you have to slam on the breaks as a result. In which case, you and every car behind you, will now be slower and it is your fault.

- less braking means less traffic banking up

- fewer accidents.

Agree, I can't believe the small gap some people leave travelling at 100km/hr!!!

I once read somehwere, that most traffic jams in the UK were caused by exessive braking.

I'm certain they are. I see mini traffic jams form because insufficient space is left all the time. The first car brakes sharply, then every car behind them does the same thing. Had the first car left enough space, so decelerating (not braking) was sufficient the whole jam could have been avoided.

Stealing braking space

Nothing worse than driving a truck and leaving enough space to stop in when some prick in a car drops in and fills the space making you have to slam everything on to avoid squashing them.

Gotta love those ones, especially when they do it at the last minute coming up to a red light. These people genuinely don't seem to understand that it takes alot longer to pull up a truck (or 4b with boat) than it does to stop the little shitboxes they are attempting to get killed in.

Love it when you can't see them through their back window because you're so close and you know they are bitching their heads off at you even though its their fault for reducing your stopping room.

One incident this reminds me

Sat, 2014-03-01 18:46

One incident this reminds me of was last year when towing boat along roadworks on the Mitchell (60 kph zone). Had a blue ford up the boat's bum waiting for the chance to pass as I was doing about 58!

Get close to the off ramp and ahead I spot 2 white bikes and a couple of gentlemen in blue shirts with fluoro vests holding something black ;) I slow down to leave a gap for him to get between me and traffic in the other lane..... Passes me doing about 80 K's giving me a dirty look and raising both arms in the air, pulls/cuts in front of me to get onto the offramp and sees the 'Boys in Blue' and hits the skids.... Let me tell you I now know that the trailer breaks work!!!!!!

Short story is by the time I pass him again he had one of the boys walking up to his drivers window. Gave him a little wave and kept on my way.... Karmha prevailed that day :)

Mon, 2014-03-03 18:24

It always seems to be old people and asians Not being racist at all

you people who leave 4 car spots at lights and 10 behind other cars is what makes traffic jams. And idiots in the right lane

and its only getting worse

cops should be allowed to issue out test resit and get them to do another driving test if the cop deems suitable, like they're all over the road, doing 80 In 100k zone and so on

 +1

I'm still on the right side of 40 but I've got alot more patience with aged drivers than I have with younger morons. The elderly have done thier time, they don't need somebody abusing them for taking an extra 10 seconds to make sure an intersection is clear or because they are sitting 5kmh below the limit. I believe in karma & I know I'll be old one day.

Nothing wrong with 10 car lengths back at times either Troy. I would hope you are sitting that far back from me (further actually) in a 100kmh zone or in a 70kmh zone in the wet. If I'm closer & have to slam on the brakes, even if I stop in time the chances are the idiot behind me will be either too close or staring at thier phone, leaving them to plow into the back of me. If I don't have to brake as hard it also buys the car behind me time to brake. I don't care if it would be thier fault for rear ending me, I'd rather not have my car damaged at all. If people get too close & stay too close I flash the brake lights a few times (without actually braking) to see if they back off. If they do... great. If they don't..... I'll change lanes if possible or ignore them altogether if I can't.

MAMILs

Mon, 2014-03-03 19:23

Sunday, I almost clobbered a group of wrinkly old cyclists (about 30 of them) that decided to pull out of an intersection when I had right of way. I jumped on the horn, more than half of them stopped at the intersection ( couple almost stacked it) and the few that made it across we're giving me the stink eye. Cheeky old buggers

I swear the MAMILs wear the lycra to try to hide the wrinkles. Got to worry about a 40yr old bloke that thinks it's cool to wear skin tight lycra & shave thier legs.

Mountain bikers are definitely better than those lycra clad wankers but all that pedalling is too much hard work for me. If it hasn't got a motor I won't ride it.

  funny this thread popped

Tue, 2014-03-04 18:22

funny this thread popped up. Was walking into Campbells tackle store on friday about lunch time and noticed a car pull out on someone at Vincent st lights. The car that pulled out on them pulled into a driveway 20 or so metres up the road and the idiot in the car got out screaming abuse and made a comment (if you were a guy slut I would f*@/&ng bash you're head in) as I know understood it was a woman in the other car I starting running up as he started to walk back to the lady's car and as I got around the corner I saw him punching her in the head through the car window... if only I could of got my hands on that pathetic coward but he was straight in his car and gone like a flash when he saw three angry scaffolders running at him.was reported to police with witnesses statements. Smart move dipshit.

^^Mate that is totally disgusting. Those scaffolders would've got the thumbs up from me if they had caught him and laid into him. Hope she is alright.

I remember witnessing an incident in Joondalup ten years ago outside the nursery I was working at. Heard a car rear end another and both drivers get out and start getting narky at each other. There must've been threats made by the guy that got hit as the other guy has ran back to his boot, grabbed a hammer, with the other guy seeing this and getting back in his car. Just as he drives off this other clown starts hammering the car boot.

Then not too long ago, a few months I think, I was heading home along Wanneroo Rd when I had noticed this orange Ford ute coming up the right lane. A car in front of me, about two or three cars ahead, has indicated clearly and moved over into the right, with heaps of room between her and the guy behind. This set him off for as soon as he could he could he has roared past her left and then gone back into the right. I've moved over into the right as well as I am due to turn into my street when what is clearly a McDonalds food bag comes sailing out of the drivers side window of the Ford ute. The lady in front has seen it coming her way but fortunately she had the presence of mind to see this arse clown suddenly slam on his brakes and try for a confrontation and she swerves into the left and pulls up on the verge whilst this jackass then floors it into the distance. Went to try and see if the lady was alright but by the time I got back to her she had gone. Absolutely insane!
