Play in prop mercury 115

Hi all, pretty sure this is my first post, I've been a member for a while though

Recently got a 15' run about with a 115 on the back. I think it's a 1988 model.

Did one run in it and it went fine. Noticed in reverse though it felt as though it was slipping/skipping. When we got home I realised the prop had a fair amount of movement in it and a small patch of oil in the ground under the motor.

I'm sorting out a new prop for it now, but any ideas what the oil would be?

Cheers and great forum.

Shaft seal

Sounds like the shaft seal is kaput and would suspect that the play is in the gearbox and not in the prop as it would slip in forward as well as reverse

 Cheers mate
Turns out the prop was actually quite loose. Tighetened that up and the problems still there.

Im guessing its no small job to replace/fix the gearbox?

Easy to replace the gearbox

Easy to replace the gearbox (Leg) but not a cheap exercise.

Harder job to rebuild the leg but certainly not impossible. They can be pulled down and rebuilt if the gears aren't too worn or chipped. You will need to be fairly confident on the tools and have a good workshop manual.

First step is to drain the leg oil and see what it is like. My guess is that if oil is leaking out, water has gotten in. If your pulling it down to replace seals you should strip the leg right down and inspect the gears, replace any bearings and seals and pressure test the leg before re installing. If there is excessive play, I personally would start looking for a replacement leg (good used unit if it can be had cheap enough)and then pull your old one down / rebuild as a learning exercise.

Again only my opinion but sort this out before you use it much more. They wont go far with stripped gears and the cost to repair the unit goes up exponentially if a new gearset is required.

Have you changed the leg oil in it since you bought it ? If so what was it like ? How long ago ?

Good luck with it mate. Be sure to post back how you go.

 Thanks for the response guys.
We're gonna put it in the shop asap and see what the mechanic says and yes it is the inline 6.

I've had it out for a few good runs and its spot on in forward even loaded right up and reverse is fine at idle. Not sure what the oil is like as we haven't done anything to it since purchase,

I'll report back once the mechanic has seen it.

Cheers
