jesus some savage people on that FB page! a good lesson to any other opportunists. I think the public execution is just as good a punishment regardless of how he goes with fisheries.
By charging x amount of money, a good chunk of the unsavory element is removed. A good reason for LB fishing licences, perhaps?
On another note, what sort of Billy Bunt do you have to be in order to actually put someone else's pot, floats (ID) included, in your boat and attempt to take it home?
Just in from the Department of Fisheries, after reports of a guy in possession of somebody elses rock lobster gear at the boat ramp this morning. Great work by the fishing community and by authorities to catch people doing the wrong thing! Perth & WA Fishing Reports
31 October, Recreational vessel seized, following community report
Fisheries and Marine Officers today seized a vessel under Operation Bagana, for alleged interference with other fishers’ rock lobster pots, south of Perth.
The alleged victim posted detailed information on social media and reported the interference to the FishWatch hotline today, enabling Fisheries officers to investigate and take prompt action.
Today’s seizure reinforces that the Department of Fisheries takes allegations of gear interference seriously and, where resources, are available will act immediately, which includes seizing vessels.
In recent weeks, the department has been using a seized vessel, which was forfeited last season after a prosecution, in an education role at various boat ramps and other locations, to remind people of the potential consequences of breaking Western Australia’s fishing rules.
South Metropolitan Acting Compliance Manager Ryan Parker said whilst the department does monitor social media, to gather intelligence, all fishers are encouraged to report to FishWatch.
“We need people to provide information on alleged illegal fishing activity to Fisheries first, to avoid compromising investigations,” Mr Parker said. “Anyone who suspects illegal activity is urged not to get involved, but to carefully observe what they see and call 1800 815 507.”
Mr Parker said providing this sort of information to support ongoing Operation Bagana would assist Fisheries officers to target and catch offenders.
“We have emphasised that our Fisheries compliance officers will be using a variety of sophisticated surveillance and other methodologies, night and day, on land and sea,” he said.
“This case shows that we potentially have another 750,000 vigilant fishers keeping watch – that’s the estimated number of recreational fishers in WA – the majority of whom do the right thing.
“WA’s aquatic resources are highly valued in our community and interference with another person’s gear or catch, selling recreational fish or other similar offences can result in penalties of up to $400,000, imprisonment for up four years and forfeiture of boats, vehicles and equipment.
“In addition to any court imposed penalty, fishers, who do not demonstrate the values expected by the community, face the very real prospect of losing the privilege of engaging in that licensed fishing activity.”
More information on rules and limits is available in the Recreational fishing for rock lobster guide or at www.fish.wa.gov.au, or collect the guide from departmental offices, or Information Outlets.
Fisheries should setup shope at ocean reef from the elevated carpark with a decent camera and see how many pots people are actually pulling. You can see everything past 3 mile to Hillaries from that vantage point.
Good to see the prick get his gear taken but concerning to see the lower level of society on Facebook. Threats of kerb stomping, slitting his threat, cutting him up quickly got the police involved and the comments stopped and some deleted
Of cameras set up . Mandurah for crabs.( heaps) Cameras all over the joint . Good to see someone got done . Always engrave pot slats frames the lot. Make it hard for them to put there I'd on.shouldnt have to , but sometimes it helps.
is the idea some dropkick nicks pots. That would just drive me bonkers trying to find the damn thing if its not where I placed it(just my nature). Hopefully this will scare the hell out of the wrongdoers and this will stop. But might only stop the stealing of pots, not the pulling of them.
It would be good if the story could be put across on the TV news, it would get to a bigger audience and might just might some people think again about pulling/stealing pots.
Mate that's a pretty shit comment. The bloke caught some cockhead red handed with his pots on board. I reckon he's done well not to belt the fuck out of old mate and end up with an assault charge. Then he reaches out to ask for advice from the social media fishing community and all you can say is he's chasing the spotlight. In my opinion, he's gone about it pretty bloody well.
He's pretty well made posts in every forum and lots of them, so I reckon he's been soaking it up.. Why ask for advice now, he seems to have already made that decision. The guy was caught red handed granted but has been roasted all over the internet and the FB jury has already laid down it's findings. Maybe just maybe there's an ounce of truth in his argument that he thought it was his. Yep he should have made every effort to make sure it was his and will be rightly charged for that, but maybe he innocently fucked up. Just a little bit of devil's advocacy.
Would take a complete idiot or a huge set of balls to ask someone to dive on someone else's pot. He works FIFO so may well have been removing what he thought was his pot while he was on site.
He could also be a thieving prick.
Either way he removed a pot that wasn't his and now needs to sell his car and pretty much go into hiding. I feel sorry for his Mrs and kids.
Either way there is only 2 blokes that heard the full story from both parties..... and they called in the tow truck. Would think they would be fairly certain of a conviction to go to that extent.
Nah the shit comments were from the Facebook hero's threatening to slit the pot theifs throat and even sending his misses threatening messages. Yeah there the sort of people I'd ask for advice.
Anyone would have thought the guy had murdered someone. It's a bloody cray pot ffs.
That's what I'm concerned about Gilly. The bloke's been totally villified all over social media with every nut job putting in their two cents worth. Let him have his day in court and leave his personal life alone.
Yep I agree the threats were not needed, but that's out of his control. But really, something needs to be done about the cray culture in Perth. It's about time someone made a stand and busted someone. Yes it's just a craypot ffs, but what would you do if you were in the same situation? Can probably guess you wouldn't just shake hands and drive off into the sunset.
He wasnt chasing any fame when i spoke to him right after it happened, he maybe now tho and I dont care. Isnt that what facebook and fishing forums are all about anyway.
Imo he did the right thing ,didnt get violent with the guy and reported it to fisheries and put it on the net.
Its not often you catch people red handed like that. Its not everyday your famous or infamous in the case of the other bloke!
if you look at the pic of the pot that james owned had carved his gear id into and how he had marked his gear id into it , in big white letters with his initials of JK 11 62 on the top frame its fairly clear whos claim of ownership can be proved
now the other bloke with his name should have a gear id starting with CB ???
so be damm hard to see how it could be mistaken identity
i dont condone the total vilification this bloke has got .....especially with a family .but it probably represents the total sum of all the blokes frustration that have had gear swiped over the last few years being dumped on this bloke in this day and age of social media it can be viral and overwhelming , both good and bad
at the end of the day he made a choice , now he is going to have to live with it an take responsibility for his actions under the law ..........
pity is rapists and other offenders dont get the same treatment
The more concerning issue I discovered over this whole debarcle, when reading the many facebook posts on crayfishing WA, was the extremely poor literacy levels of the average punter. 50 comments in and my head was hurting trying to make out what these cats were saying. Pretty embarrassing for the fishing/cray potting community imo.

Recfishwest press
