Protecting an exposed rod

I have a jigging rod that has a split rear grip, but the exposed blank bangs against the edges of rod holders (only left in when not in use).

I'd like something to protect the blank, but not sure what would be most suitable?

Want something light, and non-water absorbent (dont want water getting underneath). I thought of heatshrink, but I wont get it over the rod butt (even if I stretch it first). I think you can get some black closed foam high density tape perhaps an inch wide and 2-3mm thick, and spiral it around the blank. I've seen it before, but no idea where to get it. Maybe something else i'm not thinking of.

Any suggestions?

I'm not as worried about water absorbtion, so I just overbound mine with a whipping of venetian blind cord.

The rod blank is perhaps

The rod blank is perhaps 12mm, so I dont see how that would work (plus tubes are stretchy enough to get over the butt cap.

Thanks Sam. Could be what I

Fri, 2009-09-18 17:17

Thanks Sam. Could be what I want.

Electrical tape doesnt provide much protection, and it is prone to delaminating into a sticky mess in the sun (plus the glues dont like moisture). A few layers of gaffa tape would work, but i'd like a neater solution.

Adhesive tape: Thought of a tennis racket type grip, but most I see have a beveled, not flush edges, so it comes out all bumpy. Are the ones you're talking about a square profile magilla?

As for the other rod, i'm reasonably well familiar with those sort of coverings as it is, haha.

Racket wrap

Hlokk, that sports grip tape you mention is bevelled so that it can overlap to give an (almost) smooth finish.   You might find a type amongst the many available that suits your needs.

you can buy a box from most sport stores

Fri, 2009-09-18 19:27

lol how would you go if just cut a piece of pvc that the rod will fit down but is small enough to slot into the holder that is long enough to reach the handle of the reel.

Bit confused by what you mean. Reach the handle?

I assume you mean cover the whole read grip with some PVC tube? Not sure that would be the best solution :p

you would not put anything on the rod

Fri, 2009-09-18 20:27

all you would do is extend the rod holder. If your rod had a rear grip that is say under 40mm round you would get a pipe that is 40mm round and cut it so it is long enough to reach from the bottom of the rod holder to the base of the reel seat then cut a little notch for the reel to slot into. The same as a beach rod holder but cut to suit the boat.Hope that is a bit clearer.Doing it that way you can go from boat to boat and gunnel to rocket launcher and just leave the pipe out of the way when the rod is in use that way you dont look like a knob with tape on your rod.Laughing
