Quitiin smokes?
Submitted by BoozeFishSnooze on Sat, 2014-07-26 00:25
I'm pretty sure there would be a few ex smokers on fw, how did you do it? Was it cold turkey or slowing down till you ended up not even wanting one? One of the reason for the question is because I can ignore the urge most of the time but what kicks me is around friends even though most don't smoke. But post any tips on givin up the old death sticks haha,

not me
but my missus, she had smoked for 35 years and she has now done 2 weeks without them, she went to the doctors and got CHAMPIX shes said she still feels like she has a need for one but dosent, its more like the habbit of picking one up rather than the craving for nicotine, shes also seeing the bennefits of not smoking too no stinking, more money, she feels fitter and she tastes her food more and I have told her if she can go 12 months then we will go on holiday anywhere she likes in the world after all she wont be spending nearly $5000 a year on fags, good luck mate, never having been a smoker myself but I dont imagine its easy just be strong and determined and youll get there.

Champix works, I only smoked 25-30 cigs a day from age 16, my wife smoked 50 cigs a day from age 14, havn't had or even wanted one for just over 4 years now.

I've been down this road
I've been down this road before. Took me a couple of goes but I found I could only give up when I didn't want to smoke anymore. I started to dread that first durry of the morning. Some tactics I found helpful were not having coffee first thing in the morning (changed to an orange juice instead and waited an hour for coffee). I went and got the patches (only ended up wearing them for 3 days because once the cycle was broken I felt strong enough to go for it alone).
In the end the habbit was the hardest thing to break. Just gotta find something else to do with your hands. Tie some fishing rigs, play with the kids lego, anything at all. The first week is the hardest I reckon so if you can get past that you're in with a chance. Keep busy and change your routine for that week if you can to avoid the normal smoking times.

I went and bought some
I went and bought some electronic cigarettes off soulblu. Seems to have done the trick for me and gets me through easily when I'm having a few beers. I may be replacing one nicotine habit with another by using the e-cigs, but I feel better for it, I don't stink, its cheaper and I've even started going to the gym again. I tried champix and they worked for me, but I lacked the willpower once I came off them...surely one won't hurt? The hardest thing I've found with quitting smoking is that I've never really wanted to quit, but I'm still trying to quit for the sake of my health and my family. Good luck mate, try a few things and you'll soon find a method that works for you. Unfortunately its not easy.

Cold turkey about 11 years
Cold turkey about 11 years ago. Best thing I ever did. But you really have to want to give up, if not for better health and longer life...do it for pure cost saving! Think of all the extra fishing gear you can buy.
I think anyone who smokes in this day and age is just just advertising how silly they are.....$35 a packet is just crazy! They are going up every year for next 3 years

I tried evrything and most
I tried evrything and most worked with varying success (obviously), patches, gum, substitution, hypnosis and most recently Champix. On all of the others I could cut down dramatically but was still smoking a couple cigs a week, am on the Champix now and it is that little bit extra I needed to get me over the line. Even if you have a ciggy on the Champix there is no head spin or anything there is no nicotine getting to the brain... It should be enough to get me over the line, I will do the full 4 months on it just to make sure. I am also lucky in that I am not getting any of the reported side effects. For the wrong person they can be deadly.

Vaping is the way to go
Vaping is the way to go .. it’s a mix of flavoured glycerin with desired nicotine dose , without all the associated nasties in smokes .. costs about $100 to get kitted up , then I would say approx $5 a week on juice thereafter if that .. hardest bit is working out what you need

I'm currently vaping the
I'm currently vaping the coffee flavour from Soulblu and I love it. Bought my products off Vapeking Australia originally and tried the no nicotine juices but couldn't get a throat hit and all Vapeking products seem to be of cheap Chinese manufacturing so it was $100 wasted. Now through Soulblu New Zealand I've found their products superior and will stick with them.

Fasttech are chinese ..
Fasttech are chinese .. Dekang and Hangsen Brands have been around for years all US FDA approved for importation .. less than $5 for 50ml , I think Soulblu are around $20 / 50ml .. each to their own but I reckon it’s the same gear for alot less with free but slow postage .. for some reviews and flavours here's a link

Cold turkey, I gave up over
Cold turkey, I gave up over 20 years ago. Was sick of the smoking hangovers, shitty cough etc. Me and a mate actually had a $1000 bet to do it for two years and never looked back. One of my life's triumphs.

Cancer Cures smoking....
i got hypnotized. 1 sesh, job done, pack of Winnie blues a day to nothing. That was nearly 10 years ago. Paid off my first boat in 3 years, with what I used to spend on durries.

Smoking
A few boys have hit it on the head already.
If you really want to quit you can do it if your only half hearted it's near on impossible.
I did it cold turkey about 8 years ago couldn't sleep and felt physically sick for about a month. Found changing my social habits for a little while helped.
Good luck, when you succeed its a fantastic achievement.

Just an update if anyone was wondering I managed to go close to 2 months but I went out and couldn't help the urge. Still kick myself about how weak I was to give in.

Don't kick yourself, just
Don't kick yourself, just think how good it was to go 2 months.
Now get back on the wagon and next time you're tempted you'll know to say no and not feel like that again.

The common thread is that you
The common thread is that you have to REALLY, TRULY want to give up. No half-arsed maybe, I think I want to. You need to commit and then do it. I went from 30 a day to zero cold turkey. The driver for me was that my wife and I agreed to have children and we wanted them to come into this world as healthy as they could and that meant smokes had to go.
First week was tough, but got easier. I must admit sometimes I think, "I'd like a smoke with that coffee" but then the brain kicks in and says "no way mate". Kids now adults and bonus is that none of them smoke !

having to want to stop
Not sure about that one my missus certainly did not want to stop but I put a lot of pressure on her an told her our marriage was on the line....it worked, she hasnt smoked for 4 months and dosent want to, I think you just need the correct stimulus. It all depends on how you value those around you, some people need more forcefull treatment I think to get them to at least try. I'm not sorry for what I did and would do it again because only good has come from it.
