QUOBBA LAND BASED
Submitted by Steve911 on Tue, 2014-04-01 16:08
G-day fish-O's,
heading to quobba in the comming weeks with my girlfriends dad and a few people of the neighbourhood.
i have never been before and he says that you dont get much from land, but i have heaps of mates that go up there and cast lures and baloon with great results.
unfortunately some of my mates wont give up spots, but as a fisherman who gets horribly sea sick i am stranded on "barron" land haha.
IS THERE ANYONE who knows of some good land based spots that have a good chance of producing fish?
thanks in advance.

quobba just happens to be
quobba just happens to be one of those places where you can catch fish from just about any spot along the rocks.
but once your there the homestead has a very basic map of the most common spots to fish, ie. high rock, garths, boundarys, whistlers....

Barren land????
Don't know where you get the "barren land" bit from. Probably one of the top 5 land based fishing spots in Oz.
It possible to catch just about anything from the shore from sailfish, mackerel, tuna, cobia, sharks[hundreds of the buggers], plus pink snapper, spangled emperors, red throats cod you name it.
Any of the accesses from the Blowholes north will produce fish, the better ones being High Rock [most dangerous], North Wall, Whistling rock, Garth's rock, the 9 mile, the 17 mile, Camp rock, Cave rock, Red Bluff and so on.
If you don't have long arms now there will be something wrong if you don't when you return.

2 mile platform just north of the station
is a fantastic spot for all types of fishing but you gotta keep your eye on the swells rolling in. We hooked up a few times to big fish and just had to free spool and run to safety cause of extra large swells that roll in every now and then. Be prepared to lose gear if bottom fishing, we just kept the rigs as simple and cheap as possible. Those large white lead head jigs casted off there and retrieved quickly are absolute dynamite on shark mackeral and spaniards. Guys were ballooning there and getting heaps of mackies and tuna with a sailfish now and then. I prefer demersals there so got lots of pinkies, spangled emperor, coral trout other reef fish like flags and cod. If your mulie is not grabbed by a pelagic as its sinking you'll hook a demersal problem is the snags. Get an extra long handle on your gaff. Watch those swells!!

At low tide the edge of the platform is about say 1.5 -2m high
so I extended the 7foot gaff ive alraedy got to about double and that was just long enough cause you really dont wanna get too close to the edge. I use a 14 ft snyder glass with alvey reel and minimum 15kg line most of the demersals i could just lift up onto the reef if you time it with a rising wave. I sppool the alveys with just cheap line before going and take extra with me then throw the used spool of line out after the trip cause it gets rubbed on rocks alot. We made up a heap of 3 gang tarpons (buy them in bulk and gang them yourself ) for mulies attached to a piece of 100pb mono about 1 metre long (that cheap shit from Kmart for about 4 bucks for 100m) with a running ball sinker between the cheap swivel (again from kmart) and the hooks and thats it nothing fancy but it works and when you lose the rig (and you will - lots of em) it doesnt really matter. Make lots of rigs so you can just attach another one quickly while the fish are on. When your into the pelagics its more difficult you gotta bring them in as quick as possible cause of sharks so the fish are hot when they come in harder to gaff but you will land some its a great spot. I fished at high rock as well but preferred 2 mile platform

If you are bottom fishing
If you are bottom fishing make sure you make heaps of rigs and have lots of terminal tackle - you will lose lots as the ground is very rocky (obviously)!

tides
Check the tides for when you are there. See link attached

A lot of the reef ledges are best fished at low tide. If you have a 4wd Camp Rock and Matahari are near each other and easily accessed by 4WD. 2 mile is another good place at low tide and there are a few ledges south of the station buit you may need to do a bit of exploring as some are very hard to access.
