Quobba Trip Report Nov 2011
Mark (Iceman), Will & Jay
3.00am wake up with 4.00am leave time after a final check and we are on our way to Quobba only this time Will & I are taking Jay,his future son-in-law who has only recently got engaged to his daughter. Jay has done little fishing and a complete novice to spinning and ballooning for mackies. We had spent the last 12 months teaching him the in's & Out's of fishing this beautiful but rugged coast line.
We arrive around 3.00pm and soon located Alan Barker (The Guru) who advised most fish were being caught North of the station due to the colour of the water. Best chance was Garths and Camp Rock, bugger that meant the climb up and down. Alan advise the track to Camp Rock had been repaired and we would be able to get all the way down in the car.
Head up to the Chalets and meet some fellow fisherman (sorry forgot there names) who had been there a coupe of days and had been fishing Camp Rock and done OK.
Day1. Get up early and head to Garth's. Decided to leave Camp Rock for our Neighbours. Alan advise to get there just on light as there was a good chnace of catching some Spanglies.
Once we had completed the climb down we quickly set up with some Squid baits and Mullet (the mullet we caught in Ocean Reef Marina a few week before). Will hooks up first, fish looks like small Cobia but turns out to be a Remoray (spelling??). Not much else happened until the sun started come over the cliffs.
I decided to start spinning. bang first cast get hit by good size Sharkie, but fails to stay hooked. Jay (the novice) is next and manages to land the first Spaniad of the trip. Not size but a good start.
With the sun rising we can now get our lures out into the sunlight. My next hit almost pulled the rod out of my hand. Big mackie estimated to be around 15kg. 10 seconds later there is a massive explosion of white water as 2 big sharks decide it is breakfast time. What we did not see in the shade was the sharks swimming around Garths. Did not even get the lure back. They took the lot.
As they say when the Sharks are around so are the fish.
Will then spotted a Cobia close in and placed a rapala xrap right under it nose. Cobia did not look twice and engulfed it. Luckily it was close in so we good gaff it before the sharks took interest. Will's first ever Cobia.
The rest of the week was pretty much the same with the Sharks getting 2 out of 3 fish.
We fished early until 10-11am when the seabreeze would come in, but made the climb easier,
We ended bringing abou 25kg of filletts so we were very happy and had a great time and already planning the next trip.
A few more pics but would like ID on the first as unable to locate in any books.
caught one of these on a lead headed jig!!!!
Mr Groper got my fish. Give it back. Fishing The Post in the PM

Red Fish
Your unknown fish is a red soldierfish. Sound like a good trip except for the grey coat brigade.
Why fish from the top when Whistling rock to the north is empty or was the swell too big?

Whistlers
Late afternoon and the wind swell was up. Was able to use the wind to cast and this place is normally good for Spanglies and pinkies. Caught some spanglies and Mangrove jacks from here.

Good report - some nice fish
Good report - some nice fish landed by the sound of it.
Always funny though how differently people view losing fish after fish to the sharks at the barges and keeping on fishing, compared to doing the same thing at Quobba where that seems to be the norm!
Not having a go at anyone, just an observation!
Dan
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
