R.I.P i hope not

I need help here. One of my best buddies is very sick.
Its my shimano thunnus 1600. In my quest to love her and clean her ive dropped her on the tiles in the laurndry while giving her a wash. Theres no phycical marks or cracked housing but now when i wind her the spool doesnt go up and down. Causing all the string to lay in the same place on the spool. Ive had this reel in pieces many times relubing and removing salt build up inside her. So im prettyu sure the warrenty is up the shite. Its got somthimg to do with the worm drive that lifts the spool up and down. Ive had her apart at least twive since the acciedent and cant find the problem.does anyone know of a good reel repair man. This was not a cheap reel to buy and would be willing to spend a couple of bucks 100 or so getting her going again

cheers mitch

Mitch they were only around $249US new so I wouldn't go spending a small fortune to fix it!

Have you considered that the worm drive itself has been damaged if the reel landed on it's spool?

The possiblities as I see it are that:-

1. The worm drive which is likely brass? (or softer bronze?) has maybe flattened the thread at the point where it landed on it's spool and as a result the drive gear has nothing to run it up into the worm thread hence it just sits there!

or

2. The worm drive follower has been damaged (it has to return direction at the bottom and top of each travel stroke which the follower should do) and no longer passes all the way up the worm thread instead passing between the diamond pattern of the worm due to being damaged!

I would think that likely you will have to dissaseemble the entire reel down tothe worm drive and take a look to see what part is not working, you may even find that the worm follower is teflon or something along those lines and has hardened with age and broken as a result of the reel landing on it's spool and pushing the worm thread hard against the follower enough to deform it so that it no longer climbs the worm thread one way and switches over to run back down the worm thread the other!

I am thinking Harro's mate in Qld, Jack Erskine, might probably be your best bet if the local tackle shop who sold it to you can't do anything with it!! (Likely You'd track Jack Erskine down via Harro's website chat board @ http://www.harro.com.au

it cost me about 350au 4 years ago through mo tackle cataluge
ive had it stripped back with the main gear out and thats about as far as i can go without struggling to get it back together. im betting on ya number 2and 3 points as the more i played with it the more it just would even try to follow the worm. its a shame as it was a very smooth reel to use and to replace it is as you say around the 350 aussie mark .i havnt seen them in the shops or cataluges for about 2 years and have looked arfter it .only to break while cleaning it up for storage .bout time i updated.but was still a smooth reel to use
thanks for the advice mitch

Just thinking Mitch,

I was just thinking bout this reel of yours Mitch........

Oft times tackle shops will have collections of "dead reels"...in a box out the back - ones that they couldn't get spare parts for to repair etc.

Suppose someone brings in the same reel as yours with - a broken buckled of missing bail wire? No part - toss it in the box out back when he buys a new one!.

Quite possibly - if you asked around the bigger tackle shops - someone will have a spare body maybe for that reel...in which case if you can fix it - then you have 2!

Never hurts to ask!

Cheers!
