Rod Advice

Looking for a new rod to suite an Accurate 665HXM loaded with 700m of 50lb braid.

Have had a look at the Saltiga Deep Jig rods (30-60lb) and they seem nice. Anyone recommend anything for around the same price, or what these rods are like?

Also, anyone had experience with Van Staal rods?

Maybe its just me but I

Maybe its just me but I always feel that there is a better rod out there from one of the specialist jigging outfits than either Shimano or Daiwa. The JM rods are nice, but don't over look other premium jiggers like Synit, Evergreen Poseidon or cheaper ones like Majorcraft and Golden Mean.

Must admit I'm a bit confused why you would want 700m of line on a big heavy high-gear reel? It's probably a.good reel for sambos season with 80lb on it.

Good question aha, I suppose it just gives me more to play with. The JM rods are nice, if only they made them in different colours Honsu aha. Have you had first hand experience with Synit and Evergreen etc Till? I'm pretty open to anything at this stage. Know much about the new Saltiga G range?

Its really hard to match your requirements because most people are going to fish say 50lb on a much smaller reel.

A 50lb reel is something like the Shimano Talica TAC8 @ 445g, or a JM PE4 @ 500g or 80lb on a real hog like the bigger Accurate BX600N @ 680g or a JM PE7 @ 700g or those SOML120s!

I own a Synit Deep Shot Seriola Pro and I use it for Sambos and other deep jigging. I don't own either a JM or Evergreen Poseidon, but there are a few owned by FW posters. I dow own a couple of Golden Means, check my profile for details ;)

As the brand is pretty new, there are few around. Sam C may be fishing one this week in Fiji. You would have to contact Synit direct from NZ.

speaking of rods

Sat, 2011-03-05 23:25

Mind if I pop my head in this discussion  ? My favorite rod snapped into 3 pieces my shimano Tcurve  200 while setting the drag er I mean while fighting a monster white pointer? :( I still dont understand what would make that beutiful rod go snap and does warranty cover it ? :) so whats nicer then a Tcurve 200 the Jig Masters ? not so much for jiggin but rather bottom bouncing ? I loved the light feel on the Tcurve so sensetive it was awsum  untill it shattered my heart :(

SlimMax

The Lemax SlimMax SM-J 561 is around the same price. There are plenty of people on the forums here who rate these rods.

for vanstal

Sun, 2011-03-06 14:26

No Duncan is for the synits if your heart is set on a vanstaal last time I bent one was in Perth at Scarborough blue water a couple of years back.
But if your after some now I use tackle direct in usa they have fire sales every now and then but I'm not sure on what guides they run, the American gear tends to have crappy guides, up to you though

We sold the Van Staal jigging rods for a while and we did use them also and found they were way too soft.

Any thoughts on the Berkley Venom Viper GT?, it's supposed to be pretty strong at a price lower than a Saltiga

If I was using 80 lb braid

Tue, 2011-03-15 14:26

If I was using 80 lb braid and around 11 kilos of drag maximum would I be able to use the 200 gram powerspell or should I go to the 300 grams? What about the new titanium range?

Thanks and sorry for hijacking post!

The Powerspell 200 is rated PE 2-4 (max 50lb), so you're better off going to 300 or 400 as they are rated PE 3-6 and 4-8 respectively.
