rod for rock and surf

i've been out of the fishing game for more then 6 months now, and i'm keen to get back into it.
would like to start off by getting an outfit for rock and surf fishing.
will 10-20lb with 10-50gram cast weight be too much? the other option is 8-16lb with 7-35gram cast weight.
will be targeting tailor but want to be able to tackle other fish when they come along too.
whats the general lure weight for tailors? if the 7-35gram rod is enough then that is all i want.

Stickbaits & minnows that
Stickbaits & minnows that tend to be lighter I'd go with the 7-35gram rod. Metals, poppers etc that are usually a bit heavier & I'd go with the 10-50gram rod. Really depends on your lure preference I guess. For one that will do the allround job I'd go with the 10-50gram as it has a wider range.

my 2c worth.
WOW that is a loaded question.
I assume we are talking about lures and unweighted bait.
For that I use a 12 foot rod, that can throw up to 3 ounces. (75 grams). with a windcast reel and 20 pound braid. I also have a 8lb 7 foot, 35 gram rod. but as soon as the wind picks up I don't have the weight to punch a lure over the breakers. for those windy days when you need to get out far.
Most of my Lures go to 40 odd grams. But I have a couple of "heavies" (75-90 gram)
Guess it is going to depend on where you plan to fish and what weight you want to cast. a good 12 foot, 75 gram rod will still cast a 35 gram lure while a lighter rod will struggle with the heavier lures.

12ft is just too long, i'm
12ft is just too long, i'm after a 9ft and having it as on all rounder, so I guess the 10-50gram will be the one to get..

I have a 9ft Lemax president
I have a 9ft Lemax president with a 5000 stradic & 20lb braid for that sort of work rated 12-40lb cast weight up to 100g ( never tried any thing over 60g myself) I think its a great combo. can cast 150m with a tail wind! Its got enough guts to stop big fish but is still sensitive enough to fish for whiting with.

Both would do the job no
Both would do the job no worries but if you can afford it the Caldia would be the choice of the two. I'm a Shimano fan so my personal choice would be a Stradic 4000 or 5000 depending which felt better on the rod.
