Rottnest Channel Swim 2014 - Looking for Boat and Skipper
Submitted by SydneyZ on Fri, 2013-06-21 14:31
Hi All,
I am based in Sydney and am trying to find a boat and skipper for the 2014 Solo Rottnest Channel Swim (22nd of Feb 2014).
I have a paddler commited however neither of us have taken part in the race before. Having no local connections I would really appreciate any suggestions or contacts to assist in finding a boat and driver who might be willing to offer support on the day.
Solo swimmers require a minimum 4.5 metre boat that needs to have the capacity for a worse case situation to fit me, my paddler and perhaps one other member of a support crew.
I understand available boats get booked up about 6 months in advance hence my early request.
Many Thanks
Lamby

Hi SydneyZ,Rotto Swim seems
Hi SydneyZ,
Rotto Swim seems to be a nightmare for skippers going on past threads & chatting to a mate that uses his 60 footer each year for it (but reckons the party after is well worth the anxiety of the day)
For the day you would be requiring a 6m + boat IMO or a damn good skipper in a smaller one & hopefully the conditions are not sour! Good luck with the search I hope some members can help you out or point you in the right direction & good idea getting it sorted early
Cheers

have skippered the rotto swim
have skippered the rotto swim the past 3 years, and this year was the first time with a solo...much easier than a team.
You might need to keep in mind the cost of getting a boat, going rate starts at about $1,500 - $3,000 a day for a reasonable sized boat. The skipper also requires a deck hand for watching the swimmer.

Could anyone who has skippered before provide more tips please? As I may be asked to skipper my 6.1m boat for the event and never done it before.
