Rotto Winds and Protected Areas
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Tue, 2020-10-20 11:53
I'm taking my boys 10 and 8 across to Rotto on the early ferry Fri morning and staying in a chalet overnight and I have to confess that I have never stepped foot on the island as we generally shoot into Herring Bay or Carnac for day trips in the boat so it's all completely new to me.
It looks like there's going to be a brisk SE'ly blowing so would the area around Pinky Beach/The Basin/Longreach Bay offer ample protection for some very shallow inshore snorkling? We'll probably chuck a couple of unweighted mulies off the jetty at night time and try our luck in the wind for some tailor.
Cheers
JF

Geordie Bay offers some
Geordie Bay offers some great protection though the snorkling in Longreach looks like it would be good.

Yes the Basin is an easy snorkle or the East end of Longreach if is SE is a nice piece of beach.
Fish the jetty for Squid, Herring and the odd Tailor in the arvo/evening.
Also good for a bit of a rock walk betweeen the Basin around to Longreach

Think my boys were a bit
Think my boys were a bit younger than yours when I first took them snorkeling at the basin and geez they lost their shit they had the best time couldn't get them out of the water they were swimming under ledges and chasing fish around ,great spot for them I'm sure your kids will have a blast

Fish ID Book
Recommend getting the southern fishes book for the boys to ID the fish. I went on my kids school camp last December (back when life was normal) Snorkeling at the Basin was one of the activities and we Identified 14 species inside the Basin.
Also recommend Little Parakeet, my kids love snorkeling in the reef holes at the North end of the Bay. You will be surprised how many KG there are in the Basin at certain times.
Weather Friday/ Sat looks stunning for Rottnest, enjoy. Take good sunnies, it can be tough on the eye.

Good timing was about to ask
Good timing was about to ask the same thing as we are heading over Friday week on the ferry. Wasn't sure if it was worth bringing a couple of light rods?
What Jetty are you guys talking about fishing off, the main ferry jetty?
Was hoping for some squid / whiting.

Plus one for Little Parakeet
Plus one for Little Parakeet Bay and Longreach. The Basin is a must. All of those areas hold KG's that will make your eyes pop! Personally I don't like Geordie much as the water doesn't seem to flush properly.
Herring from the main jetty just on dusk is a safe and easy fishing option.

Banned from the island
Banned from the island completely Frosty and also the waters around. Includes gidgees too. Gotta dismantle them on a boat too but no idea if that's policed.
Rotto is a fun place to fish and explore. Just be a bit careful with your boys and snakes as I've seen heaps over there and as the weather warms up they'll be getting active.

Rotto
you’d be wise to take chain mail suits and shark shields and probably dive in cages if you want to survive the millions of whites that are currently populating our waters, after all it’s a case of when not if !
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

So… anything to add
So… anything to add Marinelass or just the usual cynical, self-serving dribble?

Given the forecast I'd be
Given the forecast I'd be heading straight to salmon bay sat/Sunday morning mate. Will be a millpond with the fresh easterlies and great snorkelling off the shore for kids in the southern end. It's sanctuary so plenty of fish, crays and some coral in the shallows. Save the northern side basin longreach etc for once the southerly is in. Little parakeet is great too once the breeze is in.
If I wasn't booked in at Lano id be over for the weekend. Sunday looks like cracker rotto day. Enjoy mate

Cheers all. Had a cracking
Cheers all. Had a cracking trip with my two boys and we ended up in the Basin in magic conditions and my oldest is still peaking a day later. Had a fish off the ferry rockwall platform and got a couple of goatfish which will become dhu bait then fished the little jetty west of that after the pub for a nice squid.
Will definitely plan a trip over there in the tub.
