Saturdays boat bash
Our plan was to go further afield than usual but the weather gods weren't on our side. We were hoping to get a rankin cod for the first time up here .
We got out to around the 14nm range and decided not to go further as it was slow going heading into a small swell so stopped on an area we have caught reds and blacks before. We managed to get 7 blacks before they shut down out there . Decided to go into a spot to target trout but on the way in I saw a nice flare up so spun around and dropped on the spot. First drop down the baits were smashed straight away and I managed to land my first ranken only tiny but it was a ranken . Sandy pulled up another ranken but a better size that could be turned into a feed and after that all we managed was feeding bait fish and pulling a few on board . We gave up and Moved on to where we have got trout before but no luck , only a couple of blacks came aboard . Decided to clean up and head in with 9 fish on board but on the way in made 1 more stop where we nailed a trout a couple of weeks back. Lines down and straight away we both got nailed . Small black for me which went back and sandy got a double of a good size black along with a small one. That was that bagged out and on the way in. Managed to get what we were after even tho it wasn't a monster

Nice bag there. Probably going to drag my boat up there sometime this year depending on work load. Have you caught a Mackie out there yet?

Great feed Russ. Lucky you
Great feed Russ. Lucky you were shallow as those rankins seem to suffer barotrauma badly in relatively shallow water.

The tiny one in my hand swam
The tiny one in my hand swam off real strong, however the other one was hooked in the gills and as it was big enough for a couple of fillets it didn't go to waste . Went in our guts for dinner last night, damn tasty too .
We did check the size limits on them and there is no minimum. Luckily for us lol

I caught a pretty small one
I caught a pretty small one at the Mackerel Islands last October in 70m and it was never going to survive so I was gald when I found out there was no size limit. Got two nice fillets off it anyway.
