the unfortunate thing

Tue, 2009-04-21 19:51

is that they will all pretty much have a side effect of grogginess to varying degrees - thats how they work. Both kwells and travel calm make my mouth as dry as the sahara, so for that reason I dont use them. I've tried ginger but dont rate it personally.

I find avomine good, but others dont like them. I think you just gotta try a few and find one that agrees with you.

Or non drugs options include the braclets with the balls on pressure points in your wrist and wearing a single earplug.

travacalm original.

Tue, 2009-04-21 20:53

its a white with blue writing box.
Dont eat or drink dairys 24hrs before u go. While u on the tabs try to eat dry stuff. Ginger is good, ginger lollies, biccies, ginger beer. Travacalm also make a box with red writing which is ginger tabs that aren't medicated so u can use them in conjuction with the originals no probs. I'd get both just so u can be prepared to fight the sickness.

Do a thread track on my name, there's a post about seasickness which helped my time offshore.

That should help you, good luck bro.

Btw reub, i have your flannel shirt and okuma hat.

I normally get very sick

Tue, 2009-04-21 20:52

I normally get very sick when going out on boats, but since i've been heading out very often i've started doing a few things different and it has worked wonders. Firstly, dont have any dairy products (certainly no milk), secondly I eat a few slices of ginger before heading out. While on the water I drink some ginger beer (make sure its a brand of ginger beer that actually contains real ginger) and also lots of water to stay hydrated. For me this has worked a treat and I have not been sick once since doing it. Maybe its just a placebo effect, but struth if it stops me spewin im gonna keep doing it.

Tue, 2009-04-21 21:09

I get carsick, air sick and until recebtly very very seasick (even on the river once - how embarrassing)

Avomine is great for the car (as a passenger) and plane but makes me really sleepy - not great on the boat though.

I tried a compounded preparation from BOVA chemist last year (as advertised on Escape with ET) - they worked really well if you take them 30-6o min before going out. No drowsiness at all. Only downside was getting them from Sydney.

Have since found a compounding chemist locally that will make them up as well - worked out about $20 for 10 I think but worth every cent. Got them from Compounding on Oxford - combination of Scolopolamine, caffeine, chlorpheniramine and ginger. Stillget the occasional bit of nausea but havent spewed for a while thankfully!

HOpe this helps!

I'm like you anchorwench

Thu, 2009-04-23 19:50

but I take 2 kwell, 3 ginger tablets (blackmores travelcalm 400mg ginger tablets) after 2 slices of toast half hour before I go out, I haven't been sick the last three months, not even a niggle or slight nausea.  After 2hrs in boat you take 2 ginger tablets every 2hrs

Red wine the night before

Wed, 2009-04-22 02:21

Red wine the night before will defo make you sick, stay away from that.  Incidentally last time I felt a bit rough my mate smashed his way through 6 pork pies and 8 cans of cider, he said he felt fine?  Maybe wortha try!!

Wed, 2009-04-22 20:48

we take ours 1/2 hour before we hit the water , but make sure you have something to eat beforehand , they seem to work better , also it helps through the day to nibble on chips or dry biscuits but no dairy or apple juice as my son found outLaughing

usually about an hour before to be sure. Too late once you're on the water...well for me anyway!  If conditions look a bit dodgy sometimes I'll take Travacalm or similar the night before.,....just to play it safe

Hey guys here is a bit of

Fri, 2009-04-24 12:28

Hey guys here is a bit of trivia for you which may help prevent some of those Sea Sick experiences.

I’ll try and keep it simple.

What actually makes us Sea Sick is that our brain is receiving two messages. One is from the little bubble in our ear that is sending messages to the brain saying that we are rocking around and not stable at all.

The second message is from our eyes saying things are all fine just out here fishing on the sea rocking and rolling a little.

Now the mind is getting mixed messages. This usually takes place when the body is poisoned etc. The body in self defence says “hey lets get this gut empty” so it can reduce the effect of poisoning.

And as you can guess it all starts to happen from there.

Try and stay focused on something or keep the mind active. This is a great help.

OK For the medically minded people out there you know were I’m coming from however this is so all can understand my comments.

Garry

So true blank cheque

Fri, 2009-04-24 12:50

my sister and I used to get terrible car sickness as well.  I can go out and do the cray pots without taking kwells by the last pot I'm getting a little bit yuckie.  But since I've discovered the ginger tablets, fantastic, as I've stated earlier.  Haven't been sea sick in three months and thats also pulling the crab pots, pulling the sea anchor in etc.  But I still can't look down in the boat, can't bait my hook or take the fish off, Bob has to do that.  But the ginger tablets certainly work for me no more berlying up and enjoy a sandwich when hungry on board.  Also found plenty of water to drink, no sugary soft drinks, just plain water helps if you feel a little bit yuckie.

last time i went over to

Fri, 2009-04-24 13:27

last time i went over to rotto it was at 9pm at night and in the middle of a worsening storm. i took 2 orange flavoured chewy kwells-one hour and 1/2 hour prior to gettin on the ferry. they sure helped.i was sure sittin in the lower deck with no ventilation and the heaters on woyuld make me go but its the best i have ever felt on a boat....even on one going around hillaries marina on a flat afternoon with virtually no swell or wind. just personal preference though.
btw i did make the mistake the year later of eating 10 party pies before leaving...... NOT GOOD
