pretty sure everyone forgot about your Broome tiger shark attack, purely because it was over 20 years ago.

Dude got got nailed by a great white at the Abrolhos a good few years ago as well.  Plenty of people remember that one, and that wasn't in the metro area.

 The one I always remember

Fri, 2016-06-03 10:21

The one I always remember was the two guys diving up in Jurien, probably late 70's early 80's where one guy was swimming above his mate and he said he saw the white come underneath him and bite him in half. I did a lot of diving up there in the 90's and that story was always in my mind, but never stopped me. I always had the 'fuck it attitude, if I'm gonna get done my bad luck' Best diving I ever did up there.

Bob Bartle it was.

Bob Bartle it was - August 1967. His mate saw him bitten in half about 10 feet below him. He swam down and shot the shark in the head with his speargun - had no effect, shark just continued to circle around with the spear in its head so the mate naturally hi-tailed in to shore.

Tiger sharks

Fri, 2016-06-03 06:10

I remember this attack well I only met the guy (Rick) a few weeks before , one of my flat mates at the time was working with him one thing I will say is these guys were diving in zero vis they couldn't even see their hands in front of their faces and after the attack all the farm workers took shark lines out and they caught 26 or 27 tiger sharks and found parts of him in 6 of them . How all them lads got back in the water a few days later blows me away .

A week and a half ago I had a

Fri, 2016-06-03 07:08

A week and a half ago I had a nasty incident with an extra large tiger while surfing in exmouth.  Late arvo 5pm cloudy and no wind  it was sharky feeling.   Out of the gloom a massive blunt head appeared and then I went for a ride. It pushed me sideways slowly on my board about 3m before I slid off onto the side of the thing. Its tail flicking me in the head on the way through. Back on my board I got a good look at it but was actually glad it was a tiger.  It was moving slowly and didnt have the look of an aggressive tiger.  Caught a small wave pretty qickly though I wasnt hanging around.  It was reported and dealt with . Ive been surfing up here for 17 years and had numerous interactions with tigers but this is the first one that has had a go or shown any form of aggression.  Its changed my mind on them not being dangerous. In the last 5 years the number of big tigers  3.5m plus around exy has boomed and there are now some scary sized ones cruzing around inside the reef.  I wont be surfing certain spots on dark anymore thats for sure.

Just that one last wave

Fri, 2016-06-03 08:31

Everyone who uses the ocean should be aware of how the activity ramps up in the hour before sunset. Back when I was a spearo, a late afternoon dive in heavily fished areas was always an eye-opener with regards to number of fish and their very active state. Sunset surfs have always seemed like a big risk to me. Up Exmouth way, this time of year, action usually picks up around  4 pm. We very commonly head out just after 3.30, everyone else coming in after labouring through the dead zone of the day, and have a big session until we have to race for home to get inside the reef before sunset.

You were bloody lucky with that tiger, cruzy--he was interested enough to come up and give you a firm nudge by way of investigating whether you were edible or not; obviously not to his taste (on the day) Those big box-headed bastards put the wind up me when they just seem to ghost in from nowhere.

Ther are some questions that need answering

Fri, 2016-06-03 16:20

According to todays "West" page 4 "search for shark answers" Mr grring was nervious of sharks which is fair enough. The story stated that a shark had been sighted earlier that day and Mr Gerring would not have entered the water had he known of the sighting.

Now.

The questions I think need to be asked and answered are;

Who sighted the shark

Was the sighting reported to anyone of officialdom/authority

When was it reported.

What if any action was taken by the person/s receiving the report.

Who has the authority to close the beach because of the threat of a large shark being reported in the near vicinity.

Did any of the other surfers in the area know of the sighting of a large shark that morning.

I think all of these questions need to be asked of the person who sighted the large shark Tuesday morning and also asked of those persons (if any) the sighting was reported to.

I hope that Mr Gerring makes as good and as speedy recovery as the circumstances allow.

Keep your chin up cobber.

When I made my report  I was

Fri, 2016-06-03 16:41

When I made my report  I was subjected to phone calls from  police/fisheries to see how serious the incident was  .   I  Wanted at least signs put up at the beach to say that a large tiger had been spotted and to warn surfers. They considered it not neccesary.  They posted it on the sharkwatch site but who if anyone in exmouth looks at that. Fisheries even went to the extent of looking for the shark so they must of thought it serious enough for that.  So a week down the track lots of people have been surfing the same spot and on dark/ late arvo totally oblivious that this incident occured.
