Submitted by Sean_Meyer on Thu, 2014-09-11 15:18
Going up to Shark Bay Useless Loop around the Salt works to attend a ship this weekend.
Anyone fished around this area or know how hard it will be to get from there to steep point?
Ill have a rental 4WD
Only taking a 6-8kg setup to throw lures for tailor or what ever is lurking.

There are some causeways that
There are some causeways that go from Useless loop across to Steep Point that are closed to the public. If you can get permission from the salt works to go across one of them you would cut a bit of time off your journey. Even going the long way around it would only be 50kms or so.
The tracks into the salt works and around there are graded regularly and usually pretty good. It's only the last section into Steep point where it's a bit rougher and you have to let your tyres down. The ranger at steep point is pretty fussy about people letting air out of their tyres, so you would probably need an air compressor to pump back up so you can get back on the road.
You need to get a permit from the ranger before you go. The details are on the web site www.steeppoint.com.au

IF you have driving access
IF you have driving access on the salt mine you could have a cast in the ponds from the causeway DTrain mentions- some BIG Tailor in there.... My mates old man took us through there 2 years ago as he worked on the mine and had a key for the gates.. we couldn't resist having a cast and ended up with loads of 80cm+ fish which were all released...
if you intend on doing this a simple halco twistie will be fine but swap to de barbed single hooks as they aren't hard to catch and they fair gupl the lure down....
enjoy....

I imagine you will be going
I imagine you will be going through Useless loop to get to the jetty, plenty of fishing right in town. Never got to throw a line in but you can see fish everywhere from the car when you drive over the causeway. If I ever go back to work there again Ill be taking some gear with me, great spot!
