Sharpening hook - What is best to use?
Submitted by J Déjà Vu on Tue, 2014-11-18 15:28
hey all
just wondering what tools out there are the best to sharpen hooks
in particular shark hooks, i have a heap of 10/0 11/0 and 12/0 Mustad sea master hooks
i have used files but dont seem to get them the sharpest as i would like or have seen others use.
is there any discs out there that people use, place the hook in a vise and then use a grinder to sharpen the hook?
thanks for your help

nah don't use a grinder
it will heat the tip, make it brittle and will probably snap off. Just plain old elbow grease. Start with a fine bastard in a vice always sharpening towards the bend of the hook. I usually file half of the barb off for better penetration. Finish it off with a hook sharpening stone. that should be plenty..

I bought a diamond file on
I bought a diamond file on eBay which has a course and fine side with a groove in both for hooks. Cost about $6 from memory and works a treat. I touch up my hooks whenever they need it and it brings them back up like a needle.
Burley it and they will come.

Hey mate, We stock a few
Hey mate,
We stock a few different kinds of hook sharpeners, from grooved stones to flat files. Personally I prefer a flat medium grit diamond file for sharpening all my hooks. Come drop past and take a look!
