Shimano or Daiwa
Submitted by EricBananaMan on Mon, 2013-08-19 17:48
Gday people. Just signed up and I am chasing some opinions/recommendations. I have my eye on a Black Hole Magic Eye Torque pe2 rod but cant decide whether to go Shimano or Daiwa spin reel. A few people I have spoken to use Stella 4000 or 5000 reels. A little bit over my budget after the rod price. I have always used shimano gear but a few mates swear by Daiwa. Can anyone recommend suitable reels in both brands under Stella prices? I am in negotiations with the minister for finance so a Stella or Daiwa equivalent still could be on the cards. Cheers for your time peoples..

If you are thinking about a stella, bite the bullet and get one IMO :) because you will always be thinking about getting one. Saves you the hastle of going through a few reels before ending up with one anyway.
just got to decide on which model:) trust me its not easy. I ended up with both the 4000fd and the 5000sw eventually. Maybe look at the 5000 hg, compromise between the Xg and pg. have the option of spinning for tunas up north and jigging down here.
cheers

Cheers fisharoo. I like where you are coming from! Do you know the equivalent with Daiwa? I live in Dampier so the jigging down "here" probably wont happen :)

My Stella 5k feels
My Stella 5k feels unbalanced on a Magic Eye. A Stella 4k (when I used one for comparison) felt perfect with it.

If jigging, stay away from a Certate, great reel but not robust enough and too high geared for jigging, I have one, love it, but it is finesse for soft plastics.
If jigging PE2, just get a Stella SW4000PG if you can find one.....simply the best PE2 reel with carbon knob.

Id go a 4000 stella on the magic eye. Cousins got 1 and a 2008 stella 5 which I think is too big as well. Daiwas saltiga is stella equivelant but only go to a 4000 size (3500 jdm but its a 4000 with a smaller spool) which is the same as the stella 5000.

Another option if you dont
Another option if you dont want to fork out for the 4000PG stella would be a 09 Twinpower 4000PG. Should be able to pick one up for $550. 08 sw 4000PG stellas are hard to find now.I have not seen anything that would balance up on the magic torque by daiwa that is robust enough to last for long jigging PE2.

Why not consider the Daiwa
Why not consider the Daiwa Catalina in 4000 size- it's just a little larger than a 5000 SW Shimano, and weighs about the same. Same body, gearing, spool, drag as the Saltiga. Check out Alan Hawk's review and recommendation here http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/cat11.html These Catalina reels are smooth as silk and very robust. Incidentally, I think my 4000 Catalina casts a bit further than my 4000 and 5000 Stella SW's. The Catalina can be had from an Aussie supplier for just over $600- so while not cheap it's still a lot less than a Stella SW or Saltiga.
Alternatively consider the Shimano Twin power, or Stradic FJ. Can't comment from personal experience on the Stradic or Twin Power though as I don't own one of them, but they are well known for being robust reels. I do own a Shimano Rarenium in 4000 size, and it struggles a bit under heavy load due to flexing of the rotor- but works fine for tailor, Salmon etc.

Have a look at the daiwa
Have a look at the daiwa seagate light...3500, made for jigging PE2. I have one and it is a very light smooth reel. Its just a tad small for my PE 2-3 but should fit a PE2 perfectly. I have decided to go right out on a limb and just ordered the ecooda hornet 8000 to try on my next exy trip.

I've got the NS Magic Eye
I've got the NS Magic Eye rod and Shimano 5000 or a Diawa 4000 sized reel is OK but overkill for the rod. I normally use a Stradic 4000 on it but a Stella 4 would be perfect (or a 3000 diawa size)
The reel in the pic is a 4020 (high gear 4000 size Catalina)

Cheers Tony. I appreciate the fact that you took a day off work and jumped in the boat to take this photo just for me! And the advice is noteworthy too. You are a legend!
