Simrad V Raymarine

One of my mates sounders died last weekend and he is looking at replacing it. He has done his research and is tossing up between the Simrad 8inch and the Raymarine 9inch. I have a Raymarine and am very satisfied with it. I have another friend who has a Simrad and he is happy with that. The Simrad unit is close to an extra grand, and the sales man that he was talking to has picthed the Simrad better than well to him because they weren't even in the equation and now it's almost brought.

Can anyone assist before my mate goes and spends his hard earned dollars?

I have the simrad NSS8 and am very happy. don't think you can beat the charting of the simrad.
cant quite fathom how it can be extra $1K....(unless the raymarine is only $600)

guess u are not talking about the NSS8 ?

are u after a combo unit or just sounder ?

what units exactly are u talking about ....may be able to offer more help.

I have the simrad nss7 and very happy with it.  Never had a ray marine so I can't add any value to the debate, excent to say I would recommend a simrad always.

only insights I have is with the simrad gear and looked into this pretty recently. My unit is less than a year old.

for my size boat 6.1m the best value for money unit was the nss8.

unless you want to go interfacing a whole pile of different stuff down the track ....tuna tower etc...(NSE has a little faster processer and better screen graphics)

The NSS8 has pretty much everything the NSE unit has ...is the easiest to use. (touch screen and buttons is awesome.....believe me once u use touch screen everything else just sucks....it's like going back to a numeric push button mobile phone !)

The integrated touch screen, key pad and dial are great aren't they!  All the options available depending on the conditions and how much smelly bait you have on your fingers!

You are correct in saying that the NSE is faster and better graphics.
I have the NSE12 and the NSS8 as a slave unit linked to it and there is a noticeable difference.
(With multiple functions/options 1 screen is simply not sufficient hence the NSS8)

Why is he pitching an NSE8?

Wed, 2015-01-14 20:50

I have one of these and they are great.... But its still several years old, non touchscreen, needs a BSM1 for sounding even 600w, BSM2 for 1kw +, needs an lss2 blackbox for structure scan, needs a gs25 external gps antenna for charting.  This is probably why it costs a grand more because it is a MFD more like a hub that you bolt shit onto.  The newer simrad nss evo2 and apparently Lowrance HDS3 due out sometime will incorporate all of this onboard in the headunit and chirp.

Is it because the unit is on the shelf and he wants to get rid of it?

What dollars for the setup?

NSE Simrad has the option to

Wed, 2015-01-14 22:01

NSE Simrad is designed and has the option to intergrade, like members said before above,10 to 12 extra functions including Auto Pilot, radar sonic hub, Wifi1,CZONE AIS etc etc.
If you do not want to add a fair few of the Hub's extra features; then a stand alone Raymarine, Lowrance, Simrad NSS or Garmin would fit the need perfectly!
and for le$$ as you do not need to pay for the extra features you do not want.
Let you mate work out in detail what he wants his electronics to do for him and then choose the unit that does just that!

Thank you everyone for your help, he has been out and brought the unit this morning.

He does intend on keeping this one for a while and onto his next tub as well.
