Small gangs for whitebait

Thinking of giving this a go now.  Hook and size recommendations please for a set of 3 gangs on the standard tackleshop white bait.  I've seen some use the mustad limerick, just not too sure about sizes.

I would say it depends on the size of the whitebait?

But a 2/0 or 1/0 set of gangs would work i reckon.

The usual whitebaits from the tackleshop should be between 5-7cm.

about size 4 would do it.  It does get a bit fiddly with small hooks.  I had a mate who used to fish for herring with a gang of 4 no. 8 limericks and just bait the last hook.

I haven't done this but was thinking you could snell a couple of 4s together and then use some bait mate?

I prefer the blue sardies over the whitebait to be honest. More oily.

A 3-gang of #4 or #6 hooks depending on the size of size of the whitebait is usually a good fit.  The small pre-packed ganged hooks I've found so far start to straighten pretty easily, so keep that in mind.

Tarpons

I use # 1 down to # 4 Tarpons . They are are very strong hook and its not hard to gang them yourself . I have seen a 20kg Mulloway landed in the river on a set of # 2 Tarpon gangs .

Three gangs

Tue, 2013-06-04 13:55

For white bait using three gangs of size 4 is generally the best. As good as Blue bait is unfortunatley the boats which generally catch it are not getting it. White bait will hang on the hooks generally better too.

We sell 3 gangs here for as little as a $1 each or we sell mustad hooks too if you want to make your own.

Cheers

Depending on the size of the bait obviously, but I used to use 3 size 2's ganged together. Caught everything on that from whiting to mullas and everything in between. Tarpons usually too.

cheers

Dale
