Sombre Sweetlip?

Gday,

Caught these at Port Gregory on Sunday.

Are they Sombre Sweetlip?

I never realised there were different types of sweetlip........

Cheers

Slatey Sweetlip, Blubberlips

Slatey Sweetlip, Blubberlips Bream, Mother in Laws. Not too many other repeatable names for them. Not generally recognised as an edible fish.

They fight well, but I only know them as 'wrongs', everything is wrong about them.

What was your secret recipe Hairyone?

great catch!

Hairyone, you have 2 species there.  The two you are holding are both Painted Sweetlip (Diagramma labiosum)  Look for smaller scale, all the fine spotting on the tail and dorsal fin and no spots on the body.  The one your mate has is the Sombre Sweetlip (Plectorhinchus unicolor) - it has larger scales, no spots on the tail and dark pectoral and ventral fins (the ones on the side and under the belly).

that's my 2c worth without seeing the fish in the flesh
