sounder shots

went for a quick fish today and was messing around with my sounder settings. Its a newish unit so just trying to learn how to read what things are. i have put it back to factory settings now as i got carried away and things ended up looking pretty bad. its a lowance elite 5 if that helps. i took these two shots and was wondering if anybody can tell me what it actually means please. we were only getting the usual wrasse at the time of these shots.

The second picture looks like the gain is set too high, that's why you are getting all the mid water clutter. There isn't a good return from the sea floor and that's why the bottom looks faint with all those ghost echos which could be that the transducer is not installed correctly, just check how it sits. You can go on to the Lowrance web site and download an Elite 5 emulator and that way you can muck around with settings on your computer screen with the actual sounder. I used to own an Elite 5 so could come out and show you how to use it if you lived in the Rockingham area if you wanted but it's all about trying things out and seeing the end results.

The second shot had the downscan overlay turned on so we can see the difference between what the sounder sees as the bottom and the green/yellow which would be a weedy bottom. The type of weed that looks like green hair. If you want to overlay the downscan you're better off changing the colour so it looks more like something. The fish look like whiting due to the streaks. The clutter on the surface looks like turbulence so you will need to adjust your transducer location or height. Try reducing the surface clutter setting as well.

The top shot looks like hard bottom with the larger echos likely to be Sambos chasing your wrasse. If you catch a wrasse put it out as a livie and you'll soon find out what they are!
