sp v bait.

Question is. Are soft plastics better than bait. Fresh bait has indisputably been the way to go. Is bait fishing now the way of the past and are soft plastics now the way of the modern era who goes fishing without bait now days

A lot of people go fishing

Thu, 2013-08-08 21:25

A lot of people go fishing without bait these days. I haven't taken out bait for about 2 years now. But it will always have its place in fishing like fishing for big sharks or any sharks for that matter and kg fishing to name a few

I am a convert from bait to sp's.  But bait still comes on the boat because the missus uses a handline.  She gets all the pickers and I catch the keepers, most times anyway ;)

When fishing for Snapper, I anchor and through floater baits out in a berley trail then alway toss a SP or metal jig about and normally hook something.

do you fellahs use the Sp's on a jig head or on a paternaster rig? we usually take out bait and throw a few jigs around.

hey Dant

Good question - I always use SP's on a jig head but my young son has used (once) on a paternoster and worked on skippy.

I am curious to hear of other's experience with this.

Gulp sandworms as bait

Fri, 2013-08-09 11:23

Gulp sandworms work well when fished as bait, for most common estuary and smaller beach species.  Whiting are especially fond of them, but so are bream, flathead, skippy, herring, and wrasse. Unfortunately, the blowies love them too....

I usually fish them on a running ball sinker rig, using a swivel and 30-40cm of fluoro leader above the fine wire gauge hook- and keep the bait moving slowly while maintaining contact with the bottom.

Personally I don't think I'd ever get completely over fishing a mulie, prawn or some squid on a hook, but If I were somehow forced to use the Gulp worms exclusively I would not feel too hard done by!

Fri, 2013-08-09 20:27

I only been bottom bouncing once or twice but on one of these occasions I put a tsunami shad on my top hook of paternoster , caught one fish that day and that was caught on the shad, only YTKing I've caught. I'll use that set up next time
