say 1 - 1.5m of 80lb mono (depending how shallow you fishing over reef),  large circle hook, big bit of squid. Maybe a small ball sinker at top of  hook to make bait drop straight down from blob. Good fish there. They up there with my fav eating fish. Amd yep gotta love the alvey reel

That's exactly what we use up north just a running ball sinker to hook.

im getting em in knee deep

Thu, 2024-04-04 15:23

im getting em in knee deep water man i was thinking maybe a cork and some split shots.

i was using 30lb mono then 60lb leader about 70 80cms with a 15gram ball sinker and like 4 5/0 hoodlum worked well but still losing 4 5 rigs a night to snags then 2 or 3 to fish they go hard in that shallow reef my alvey finger looked like i hacked at it with a knife by the time i was at the end of my trip haha

Flatten the sinker

Makes it easy to plane up on retrieve helping to avoid snags and stops it rolling into holes

6/0 or 7/0 hook

Thu, 2024-04-04 16:34

6/0 tarpon or suicide hook, big lump of mullet fillet bait casted out as far as you can then leave it sit and wait till the fish picks it up otherwise its going to snag up every time. If the wind is in your face then a big ball or bean sinker running right down to the hook. No trace, straight on the end of your main line

Thu, 2024-04-04 19:06

we found the smallier baits eg half a poddy or whiting  fished better because they were picky around the moon. and i reken because they got a smallier mouth then most demercals you need a smallier but stronger hook. but deffs mullet id be using it again for em

Let us know if you try

Let us know if you try anything different and how you go. I fish shallow water for big spangoes up here in exxy using same rig as most have noted above. ~60-80lb leader with a small running ball sinker to a single size 6 black magic KL hook. I use whatever I can catch as bait including whiting, gardies, longtom, dart etc and find a decent bait keeps the charlie courts away. I previously caught occys and used their legs but cant keep the charlie court off them!

As Caranrvonite said, I cast it and retrieve the slack and then try not to move it to avoid snags. Some places, snags are just unavoidable but I think!
