Splicing cray pot rope

Fark me, how hard is it to splice ex-pro cray pot rope, very slow going with the Fid. I even tried submersing it in boiling water to 'soften' it but this did buggar all.

Anyone got any tips to make it easier?

Do not try to pull each strand too tight as you do it. It will allow itself to lay back down as you go, but then again I would love to have $1 for each splice I have done over the years, I'd be a rich man

If you bring them round I'll do them for nothing, should take about 15 minutes for 12 with 3 tucks on each

How big is your fid? Too small and it makes hard work on old rope and you are liable to stick it in you hand

Large

Fairly large fid, stainless blade is about 23cm long. Already stuck it in my thumb once, the neighbours knew about it. LOL

It's all good, I just though their may have been a simple trick I didn't know about.

Mate I found a screw driver

Mate I found a screw driver works best. Easy to push through, then twist to open wide easily! Recently did some myself. Soaked it over night in water and did nothing!!

Using a screw driver tears the fibres as you push it through.
As Big John said he has a fid, the proper tool for doing the job

I can do a couple for you...

...if you're running out of steam.  As we discussed when you came over, used cray rope is pretty hard, but perserverance will pay off.

What type of rope?

Fri, 2015-01-23 10:33

A few questions?

1) Am I correct in saying that the standard rope that pro cray boats use is the 12mm hard lay PP (polypropylene)

2) I am wanting to learn to splice this also if anyone can direct me to a good video or animated display of how to do it? How do you lay the start out? Is 3 lays enough?

with knots I use a double sheetbend with enough tag end to fold it twice back through the spliced eye to help with making sure it does not come undone and use double overhand stopper knots to hold the floats In place

mostly hard or medium, extra hard is near impossible to splice.

3 lays is plenty, sometimes we did only 2 and replace after a couple of seasons as the wear point is at the start of the eye from going thru pot winch.

To start, splay out the 3 strands with the middle one on top.

Lay this on top of the standing line and push fid thru top strand on standing end.

Push middle strand thru fid then do the other 2 as they lay.
