squid jigs and octo jigs

Just hoped off a plane from the east and resorted to an eastern states fishing magazine to read on the flight home.  read a couple of articles, one about squidding, which recommended daiwa esmeraldas md squid jigs and one about deep jigging for reef species (eg snapper) that recommended 'octo' jigs which are a weighted soft rubber covered jig that imitates an octopus or squid.  the author said that very little technique is required as the preferred movement is slowly across the bottom, with an occassional slow lift and drop back to the bottom.  The squid jig i reckon i'll find if a look in any decent tackle shop, but i haven't come across the latter (not that I have been looking).  anyone seen / used these?

Octo jigs have been in stores over here for at least 4 or five years. If you're living in Perth and your  local tackle store doesn't stock them, change shops

is it a specific brand name, or just type of jig.  i've seen and used the soft bodied octopuss skirts that require a sinker, but i haven't seen (or looked for) the weighted jigs before.

Most stores sell the shimano lucanus, gillies ockta or river2sea octo sniper. I've had more success with the cheaper gillies than the lucanus though

Yes, the prongs broke off on a large squid, I was not happy about that. Yo-Zuri works just as well, is a bit more durable and is about $10 cheaper. I have been using the same Yo-Zuri for over a year, it never lets me down.

I'd suggest you give them another go. I do rate the 'Zuri Aurie Q Ace's highly though.

The Daiwa squid jigs are the ones with a rattle in them. Expensive, but worth it. I have also caught a few harlequin and blackarse on my orange octo jig. Just leave the rod in the rod holder on a drift and the swell will do the rest for you.

IMO im not a fan of the diawa jigs, just dont like them never done to well on them. For the same price you could get a yo-zuri or yamashita and for a few bucks more a Haramitsu which i find the best.

Most shops around perth have the octa style jigs just ask the staff to show you them.

Squid Jigs and Ockta jigs

Thu, 2012-06-14 12:40

The Daiwa Squid jigs do produce squid, theres no denying it, But when putting  them along side other brands like Yamashita, Yozuri and Gancraft their usually 2nd favourite.

The ockta jigs are good for attaching to the line and dropping it approx 1m from the bottom than placing in the rod holder and letting the boats motion do the work. They do catch fish but as Milsey mentioned Pirate jigs are definitley taking the fancy of more demersals lately which you can more actively work . We do sell both instore.

Cheers

For squid Ive found the Yamashita Live 2.5 pink absolutely kills the pig... though not specifically targetting squid, Ive tried soo many times with assorted colours etc from Big W specials and have caught nothing.. I found this jig awesome!!! and have since bought 2 more in different colours to cover my ass.. going out on the weekend with only squid jigs cause me and the neighbour are hooked!!! we also use a floater with a spiked whiting or mulie, which tends to get some decent sized squid, but thats a bit of a patience game, which works well when we anchor chasing b'n'b species.... nothing like a big squid to up the ante of a seafood bbq...
