squidding deeper than 3 metres

i have only ever targetted squid in shallow water, up to about 4 metres.  does any go deeper and if so how do you get the jigs down, does anyone use a patenoster rig?

7m is my fav, I use 2.5 - 3.5 gm no probs.

Have you seen the sleeves yamashita have for extra weight? Also use a yamashita 30gm for deeper or rough weather

7m has been on fire for me of late. 3.5 size seems to attract the big hoods

in 20 /25 m use a bait spike with a whole whiting on the top of a paternoster rig then a set of snelled hooks for kgs on the bottom droper  you will get big squid and heaps of big cuttle fish  over any weed patchs trough there

I use the paternosta rig and the squid jigs need to have no weights. Works well while drifting with little effort, just chuck it in and only check it when you need to move. Only down side I have found is tangles are common.............

Had pretty good catches around the 20mtr mark.

Hi Ian.

I use paternosta rig for drift squidding in deeper water and find a twisted dropper will lessen the tangles. Not cure, but lessen ;)

I seem to do best in the 5 to 7 metre range myself and use a 3.0 to 3.5 weighted jig, just all depends on the wind and how fast your boat is moving really. Poss need the sea anchor out at times but gets down no probs just keep letting line out :)

agree totally using normal jigs, good thing about duos strong wind or not they get down .sounds weired but i cast and count as jig goes down .30 feet 14 seconds ,then i work jig never fails..colour choise is a must ,i also use pure white jigs (cloth ones) exellent in light winds.everyone has own choice, and favs in jigs .i hate paying 26 bucks for cloth ones 2 trips and they are screwed, i have had some duos from last cali classic still look new, and still work like new, cant say that about to many jigs on market

depends on location.

The sound is best in the 3-6m range (Can get them deeper and slightly shallower) but more caught in those depths.

Off cott, Scarb etc..deeper in the 8-15m depth.

Ive got some down south (Location not going to be given) in 3m and 15m only 100m apart from each other. Squid were just as big and plentyful in both depths. Biggest I've seen too with one being 90cm from tenticle to end of hood.

I got some cheap jigs off

Tue, 2013-07-16 09:24

I got some cheap jigs off ebay, they have a flashing light in them which automatically comes on when in the water.

I have caught a few squids in Dampier using them..... anyone else tried these flashing light jigs?
