Squidding Techniques?

Hey guys,
Just interested to hear what techniques people prefer to use when chasing squid?
Jig or no jig? Also do most people use mono or braid?

Good question
I have just started chasing them and my Mate is kicking my ass..lol
He consistently catches more than me when we fish for them together. Trying to copy his technique and jig colour but still not catching as many.
Does the brand of jig, colour or weight make the most difference? Do people catch them with a jig just hanging while they fish?
I would love to get some tips.

Personally...
I use braid with a mono leader. Yozuri or yamashitas. Always 1 jig rocking to the rythym of the boat.
My start off rule of thumb is "bright day bright jig". I use the japanese style of let it sink then 3 or so hard, sharp, strikes! Let it sink and repeat.
This is only my method. Good luck

Use this technique when drifting. You can adjust the dropper length and distance from dropper to sinker. I usually make them longer than normal. It's works well as you know your jig is in the zone with the sinker touching the bottom.

Drifting will usually produce the most squid. A good jig makes a huge difference, I use daiwa emerldas jigs and haramitsus.
As for technique a slow lift then allow to sink as close to the weed as you canand repeat is what works for me
I second the jig in the rod holder too
Light braid to even lighter flurocarbon leader, I use 4lb braid to 3lb flurocarbon, with the drag backed right off

I let my jig sink down the end, I did 1 tap every minute on 3.5 jig still got a squid

Hand line is the best for squidding IMO
Just use a very light mono (4-10 lb), always use quality jigs as mentioned by other members.
Drop it straight to the bottom, as close as possible to the weed and couple of twitches and lift.
Now drop it back and you will see the squid take the jig on the drop if they are around.

Recently, I have set jigs on
Recently, I have set jigs on a 1m leader below a float whilst the boat is drifting over banks. We did extremely well in Busselton and I have picked up a few up here.
Alternatives is a heavy sinker down to the bottom, 1.5m up a short leader (30cm) off a three way swivel with your jig. Lower the sinker to the bottom. This way you know your jig isn't catching weed. I have again picked up a few this way.
Alternative is with a small hand line drifting over weed banks 'jigging'.
Regardless of what I do, my father, using the same method as me, will always catch more than me.

I believe in my technique
Yet my mate right next to me does the slow lift and sink technique. We both catch squid and sometimes one will out squid the other. And yes try get that jig over the weed. I countdown my jigs in the area on the day i am fishing so when icast i know gow long to freeline before starting my action. Jigs are designed to dart as to imitate a fleeing prawn. Watch the action in clean water or a pool.

Very easy to catch squid in
Very easy to catch squid in Dampier....
Slow troll along shallow rocky areas until you hook one, or see a school of them on the surface. When you wind one in, all his mates will follow right to the boat and then you can catch a dozen in 5 minutes. Bloody awesome fun.

I've tried various
I've tried various techniques landbased and boat. All work at different times depending on current, wind, depth, tide, day/night, cloudy sunny. Colour of jig. There are a lot of variables, and after experimenting you will find what suits you best and you will learn when to use a different technique in different conditions. My go to technique is also the japanese style of sharp jigging then sinking. But at the same time my Uncle has just dropped a jig over the side of the boat and let it troll with the drift and has caught squid at the same time . But jigging has got to be more fun right!
So, sorry because my post may not be very specific in answering your question, since there are so many variables, the die hard japanese guys could and probably have written a thesis on it. I learnt and became interested in squidding when I was watching the Yamashita videos. A lot of science goes into the techniques and development of the jigs which is quite interesting. You will learn heaps from these videos!
