Steep Pointers with boats

Hey all you people that take your boat to Steep Point and camp at Shelter Bay as I do.

We have always carted fuel in by jerry can.  Last year was 500 litres for 6 days and that still wasnt enough thanks to the second boat being thirsty.

Next year we are going for longer which will mean a fuel run out to overlander mid trip.

Does / has anyone on this forum ever taken fuel in in 44 gal drums, or had it delivered to the ranger?  Just interested to know about cost and logistics if anyone can help?

Thanks.

There is 14km of new road along useless Loop as well as a few newly bitumen bits after Tamala. after the useless loop turnoff, the road is pretty bumpy.

I take a 44 on the back of my ute when going to steep, just use a jiggler hose to transfer into jerries and fill the boat with them.

I used to buy 44's pre filled from shell distribitor in Darwin for long range trips. It's quite a bit more expensive to do it that way over filling the drums yourself although lots of servos don't like you filling 44's on the back of a ute.

Make sure you get a clean one and chuck a tarp over it if it rains.

As Dodgy said

A lot of servo's wont allow you to fill 44's. We fill one for work but that is with diesel and still have to run an earth lead. I don't like your chances of filling one with unleaded, maybe at an unmanned outlet would be your best bet.

One other tip if you do

Sun, 2016-05-15 17:30

One other tip if you do happen to fill the 44's in the boat. Drum around saltwater will give you rust rings on your carpet that you want get out. put another carpet offcut underneath the drum.

60Lt.

Mon, 2016-05-16 08:27

Maybe concider using 60Lt drums.
Easy to move around for dispersing weight, and for lifting so u can carry maybe two in the boat.
I would put some plywood under them to cushion the movement.
If you need more fuel while there, I think it would be quicker & cheaper to take a trip back to Denham by boat than drive out to Denham or Overlander.
Most seem to do that, maybe worth thinking about.....

We are staying at Turtle Bay moored up against my mates 40 foot cat for a week soon ........do we need to travel far to get onto good fish outside Hartog?   Like others just trying to plan on how much extra fuel to take, unladen we get almost a NM to a litre. The boat, a 6.8 seaquest has a 200 litre tank

Nah mate don't have to go to

Mon, 2016-05-16 19:22

Nah mate don't have to go to far plenty of fish baldies n snapper up near cliffs at cape inscription,  I hear reds out in the deeper water

if trolling do big loops around cape inscription  from deep to shallow should pic up mackies.

last time we were there were a lot of sharks and gave up  so might pay to drive around there  lots of spots all round that island

also so be vigilant up that end can turn to shit pretty quickly

whitnell point is not far from there it's a bit sheltered, but dunno if you will get ya mates cat in the bay as its quite shallow and few bomies around

Just got back from a trip

Mon, 2016-05-16 18:23

Just got back from a trip and we found good fish in the 70s which was 10km from shelter bay.

Its just over an hours drive from steep to denham by boat and its a long way from the servo to the ramp to fill 44s or jerries. Well a lot longer then i would want to walk. I know someone up there with a ute who may be able to help if thats the path u want to take.

There is only 1 servo open in town now and thats the one at the little shop on the corner as u drive into town.

I would use a 1000l ibc full of fuel and syphon into jerries but i wouldnt want to drive with it half full if you didnt use it all.

I can tell you now, i wont

Mon, 2016-05-16 18:41

I can tell you now, i wont be wasting a days fishing to go back by boat to denham just for fuel unless the track is closed.  Some other bastard can drive out and get while i go fishing.  Thats the perk of being a boat owner

Tue, 2016-05-17 00:08

Hey roddo,

Is the tackle shop still where the other servo was operating or is that gone ?

If only one in town now, they can charge what they like. Bit of a worry !

Planning on heading up again probably in July. Now have to plan way ahead (use stacks of red Gulp worms to slay Yellow fin whiting from shore with a coldie in my hand :-)

You can't fool me, it wouldn't be the first night you spent in the company of Her Majesty's finest. Haha
Taking the tinny so if we can drag you off the beach, you will be more than welcome to partake in some close in squid hunting. The boss does a nice Calamari & salad.
We are in Hartog Cres, about half a tinnie walking distance away from Oceanside Village.
