Steep Point/Quobba 29th of May to 6th of June
Submitted by tomtom on Sat, 2015-05-02 18:30
Hey all, first post here just hoping to find some other people planning something similar to me.
Planning on heading North at the end of May by myself. Really keen to try some game fishing off the rocks at either Steep or Quobba but doesn't sound like the place to fish by yourself!
Will be heading up from SOR and with some careful packing should be able to fit another 1 or 2 people in the Ute. Or if anyone is up that way around the time Im going it would be sweet to catch up for some beers and fishing.
Could be cool to hire a boat out for a day or 2 as well!

Mate, don't think I'll make it up this year but done about 6 trips over the last 18 months with at least 4 on my own (usually just 3-4 dayers)....if you're sensible and stick to fishing the fault line at steep point you'll be okay. you'll usually find heaps of people that'll give you a hand to gaff your fish and have a beer and a chat with. Just don't get brave and wonder off on your own or fish if the swell is up..stick to the areas where there are other people to raise the alarm if you do go in....the fault line side of the 'point' has low and high spots and you can be as brave as you want mate...I found it nowhere near as daunting as I thought it would be.....don't fish the south/west side or false entrence on your own.

Thanks for the encouraging reply!! Was kinda hoping it would be like that. Always better to share it with someone else but goin solo is better than not going at all! How far will I need to walk from camp to spots? Just wondering if Im gonna need to pack real light on gear to carry to spots.

Mate I reckon I walk a massive 30 metres from where I sleep to where I fish haha (seriously )
at the fault line walk to the right and the cliff is low and walk to the left and the cliff is higher... No secret spots at fault line mate just be courteous; whomever is there first gets dibs on the spot ever if they walk off for a rest and give people plenty of room to fish unless they wave you over.
its heaps less complicated than it might seem mate - if you're spinning just put in the hard yards and when you feel like your are is going to fall off and you can't cast anymore then you've done about a third as much as you need to!!!
ripper place mate you'll love it

Haha thats awesome, keen on that! How does the camping work up there? I see you need a permit but do you get spots allocated or is there a big area you can pick from? Any essentials I need that I wouldnt think of normally?

Tried heaps of time to book a specific spot at the point and always told they limit the numbers but never allocate spots up at the point.....and that they only allocate spots at shelter bay

For Steep, May/June is offpeak so you'll probably be able to book straight in... and it is a bit of a hard slog bringing everything in with you
However - Quobba is just a bit futher up the road, and is apparently much more accesable - And it is Peak season for Mackies !!.. you have to drive around to get to the different spots - but that does mean theres different spots to try. - I've done a few Steep trips and love it, this year we're trying Quobba, so if you come up to Quobba - Feel free to say G'day - we'll be up there for the first week in June

Hey Fireguard, thanks for your reply. Since last coming on here I had changed plans after realising Quobba will be the better option! So planning on spending the whole time there unless it proves too difficult solo. Will say hey for sure, I'll be the Pom in a red ranger losing lots of fish haha
