Steering Cable

Geez I'm having a great week.

My boats been up on blocks for the best part of this year while I completely stripped back and re firbed the trailer.

The boats been back on the trailer about a month now I'm starting to get a few maintenance things done that I wanted with it, and now the steering wheel as well as the outboard wont turn.

I cant have it that the cable has siezed as a month ago when the boat went back onto the trailer the motor was serviced for the 2nd time since I've had it in 12 months (I know overkill)

What can I do guys, i've read up about disconnecting the steering arm, and belting the cable arm end to loosen it, i've seen posts about heating up the sleeve arm.

I no tradie, I'm handy though.

What can I do guys ?

Steering arm

Disconnect the steering arm and see if its the motor or the cable thats seized.

Usually its the arm that runs through the front of the motor mounting bracket and CRC and a little bit of assistance is all thats needed. Once you get a bit of movement work it back the other way so it gradually comes free instaed of trying to go all the way through  in one go.

 Dont waste money on another

Dont waste money on another cable, fit hydraulic. Usually once the cable seizes its on the way out.

i just did this fix for a mate on a 3yr old engine that had been laid up over winter.

it just gums up inside the tube.sometimes it takes a bit knocking to get it to move.

a copper hammer is best so you don`t round over the end of the cable.

and just persivere back and forward till it comes free.and when you park you boat

allways leave it with the motor turned so the cable is all the way out.

Once you have it freed up,

Once you have it freed up, remove the cable from the outboard and clean up the inside of the tube with wet and dry until all rust is gone, then drill out and tap a grease nipple into the steering cable (stainless steel one) and put a few pumps of OIL - not grease into it.  This has worked for me - from having to free it up before every trip to not having to touch it.

Also - if you need a new cable, get a 'no feedback' one (or hydraulic if you can afford it...) -

Yeah all done guys, ended up

Yeah all done guys, ended up having to be a total steering helm and cable replacement, it took me and my 12yo able assistant a fews hours to get it in but I reckon we did a good job.

Thanks for everyones advice it helped us heaps.

So far this week we've replaced a battery and moved it's location, replaced the steering and installed a fuel/water filter seperator and new fuel line all the way back to the motor.

And the able assistant got a couple of nice swigs out of Dads beer at the end of it ;).....Cheers.
