stingrays....

i go snorkelling and scooping for crabs in the summer, and see a lot of stringrays....

 

has anyone here tried catching one ?

 

malaysian friends of ours say the small/medium size ones taste nice when cooked right

They're caught all too often as a by-catch, you don't have to try to catch them =)

 

I've eaten a Grey ray before. Battered it and deep fried and it tasted like shark with a bit more sweetness to it.

Other people who've tried eating stingrays say it was terrible tasting so... not sure what the deal is

 

What I can tell you though is the slime on them is absolutely putrid and if it gets in your clothes/shoes you may as well just throw them out. Just thinking about the smell makes me nauseous

 few years back used to fish with an indian bloke that used to love a stingray curry the way i met him was, i was havin a fish when old mate got a big run and asked if i could gaff it asumin it was a decent fish legged it over to see a frog ray i yelled to him snap it off just a ray to which i was told in no uncertain terms to gaff it never tried it meself but he swore by it

In Singapore, always first feed is Chilli Mudcrab, then next night chilli Stingray, superb

 

As an aside, you eat stingray more often than you know. The faux scallops are generally punched out circles from the flaps

 I ate a small ray once when I had no fish at home.....it was delicious! a bit of prep (you have to peel the upper and lower skin) but other than that, ezcellent tasting fish!
