Swimming with Melon-Headed Whales
Submitted by soupster51 on Tue, 2010-03-30 16:54
I took the boat out for quick run on Sunday and came across a pod of Melon-Headed Whales. I had never seen them before. They were very relaxed and finning on the surface, slapping their tails about. I put on the mask, snorkel and fins and they let me get within ten metres or so before going down. To my surprise they went right under me about five metres away. One of them rolled on it's side and I could see it's eye moving as it watched me. Awesome Experience. The photos are off the www as I didn't have my camera and it was too good a story not to share.

awesome to have an encounter
awesome to have an encounter like that. especially unexpected. I ran into a dugong at Harvey Bay Qld on a casual snorkel. It almost freaked me out. It takes some nerve.

That'd be awesome, one of the top to do things on my list is to get in the water with some whales

Limited Time
It was awesome. To be honest I didn't mind not having a camera, it allowed me to just relax and swim with them slowly instead of worrying about trying to get a quality photo.

Mate the internet was down at the Compound on Sunday, the joys of living in a third world country. We'll give it another crack over the Easter weekend.
