Tow Vehicle Recommendations (3.5 tonnes)?
Submitted by DunkerT on Tue, 2014-07-01 11:26
Hey all,
I was wondering what tow vehicles people would recommend? I've got a 1972 Frazer with a 200 Envinrude outboard on the back, when I bought it the chap told me that I needed 3.5 tonnes towing capacity for it. The trailer has electro hydraulic braking.
I'd like something that I can use to tow the boat around but also use for weekends away, and hitting the 4x4 tracks. I'm considering the obvious options (Patrols, Landcruisers, Pajeros) but would certainly appreciate your advice on other options or which models to go for/avoid!
My budget is max $8,000.
Thanks!

infact landcruiser need to be post '96 to have 3.5T capacity aswell so you may be struggling to find something under 8K at all in the cruiser patrol.
look at the landrover discovery.

3.5t
Have you put it on a weighbridge ? I just think it seems a bit heavy ?
Maybe weigh it first and you might not have to go 3.5t

Thanks for the reply guys,
Thanks for the reply guys, I was thinking 3.5 Tonnes seemed a bit much. It's at the dealer at the moment for some engine troubles. I'll see if they can get it weighed for me whilst it's there. Would be good if it comes in a bit lower, I was surprised when the previous owner said 3.5 tonnes!
I'll let you know how I get on, I was hoping that I coud go for a Patrol, just like the look of them and there's a few bargains out there at the moment. A couple of friends have suggested 100 series land cruiser, but I'll see what the weight comes in at.
Thanks for your help!

$ 8 K
for $ 8 k and 3.5 tonnes the only car would be a disco for that price as the others have said a weigh bridge will fill in the boxes

P.s. The frazer is a 24 ft with pod conversion for outboard.....don't know if that makes the 3.5 T sound more realistic....

Any ideas where I could find a weigh bridge, if the garage is unable to weigh it for me?
Thanks again!

Budget
I think his budget is sound. He wont get a 200 series cruiser but he'll get something capable. Most likely a Land Rover or a Range Rover.
Just to note, 80 series landcruisers are only 2.5t up to about 1995, then 3.5t.
I think too many people get caught up in the thought that you need $$$ to have a capable vehicle.
Definitely run it over a weigh brigdge. I reckon 3 tonnes sounds about right.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Yeah, the boat has been
Yeah, the boat has been living in dry stacking and they do the launch/retrieves for me so I wan't too worried about the towing. However, I'd now like to move it and keep it at my new place so I can do work on it. As such, I'm going to have to start towing it myself, hence the need for a new car - my hundai getz just won't cut it!
Looks like there's plenty of Disco's for my price range....couple of Range Rovers too....

The 4.2 diesels are good engines, but not very fast. You could stick a turbo on later if you want some more power. It has high mileage, but in your price range all of them do. The GU is rated for 3.5T
You should do some checking but I think that the GQ patrols might not be rated for 3.5T.
Also the landcruisers before the 100 series might not be rated for 3.5T.
The series 1 Disco's are rated for 4T and there should be some cheap ones around.

Looks like a disco may be the way to go - loads of deals online at the moment. Seems to be the cheapest vehicle around with the tow capacity and there seems to be plenty of good reviews. You certainly see 1000s of these driving horse boxes around back in the UK.
Thanks for the advice!
