Trailer brakes

Hi all interested to know how long your brake pads last on your trailers. One of the braked smoked up on Saturday so today I stripped them and had a look at what is going on.

The brakes are 3 years old and I do have them coming on quite hard because the car is an automatic. When I pulled the wheels off I discovered that there were no pads left on a couple and all were rusted and cracked. The ones that were still in tacked but rusted weared uneven. The inside pad had more meat than the outside pad.

Any ideas why they wear uneven and do they normally rust to nothing.

cheers

Seized calipers

Sounds like your calipers could possibly be seized up. Easy way to find out is get someone to pump your brakes and see if the pads squeeze on and then importantly off, if the caliper is sticky they will stay on and wear/burn

I have a similar problem

Sorry, can't offer any advice, but I also need to do up my trailer brakes.  I am chasing suggestions on where to take my hubs to get the discs skimmed.  They are rusty and have a lot of lumpy scale that is chewing the crap out of the pads.  Anybody recommend somewhere familiar with boat brake setups??

You can give Martin’s trailer parts a call, they do/sell brakes and they were quite helpful when I went there to get some info for my development project. Ph 9279577.

Most people I have spoken to recommend Rob's Mobile Trailer Repairs, well that is where Martin's sent me, but I have always get most my work done at Tyrepower in Clarkson, both for work and the boat.

also have a look if you have

also have a look if you have springs underneath the trailer if they are sound.

I replaced mine today and it is a bit of a job when all is coroded and 1 spring broken.

the parts are supprisingly cheap, 4x 9 leaf springs and all the hardware to replace for less than $300.

put the boat in the harbour out of the way to make it a bit easier, but checked very reguarly for intruders and tide changes.

If your wheel bearings are

If your wheel bearings are loose, the out side pads will wear more and on an angle.

have the discs skimmed and check the bearings, hose em off when you get home.
