hi all I'm sourcing first hand knowledge of what is the legal requirement for trailers needing a breaking system .The scenario I have is a boat with motor and fuel weighs in at 1600kg put this on a trailer that weighs 500kg pushes the total weight over 2 tonne
Questions - what breaking system is now required
Must I know source a trailer with an ATM greater than 2100 kg
thanks all

Yes
The simple answer is yes you need a trailer with breakaway brakes (electronically controlled usually) and brakes on all axles once you go over 2T.
There would be many, many, many trailers that are underspecc'd travelling around at any time but insurance would be void if involved in an accident.

The other thing ive have
The other thing ive have just discovered guys is your boat cannot hang outside your trailer from the tyres by more than 150mm , that makes it oversize for that trailer.
Also if a boat or load is more than 2500mm wide, you will need a permit to tow it.
Lots of little regs that people are unaware of.

Oversize
A permit for the towing vehicle can be purchased from dept of transport. Oversize placards to face front & rear. Night time travel upto 2.7 meters only. Must have flashing 360deg amber lights for night time travel. No night time travel for over 2.7m. Daytime travel requires 360deg amber flashing lights when 3.0m wide and over.

All my dealings with RAV
All my dealings with RAV (oversize) including permits have been Main Roads.
AFAIK it's nothing to do with DOT

My mistake, it is main roads
My mistake, it is main roads and DOT for inspections.
