Transducer Location
Submitted by jng on Thu, 2009-10-29 22:09
Just having a couple of issues with the location of the transducer, in the installation manual it states that the transducer is to be located on the starboard side of the boat. The installer has installed it on the port side of the boat, and as you can see by the picture the transducer is a to high up along the transom aswel.
Does it make much difference if the transducer is on the port side?
Any information would be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks
Justin

looks
looks to b to high up and would distort due to bubbles - turbulance at speed port or starb not an issue

starboard install
so it sits in "clean" water regarding the rotation direction of the prop.
Its hard to tell from the pictures, but it may be sitting about the right height.
Does it sit like this with a ruler??

There is nothing wrong with
There is nothing wrong with having your tranny on the port side, some argue that it will actually add a little lift as the port side will ride lower then the starboard due to prop torque (I don't know if it will make that much of a diff). I do think however that it is actually to low. A better position will be at the chine.
This is hard to see clearly, but the tranny is only 3mm lower then the chine, no rooster tail and clear picture at WOT.

That looks like an Airmar,
That looks like an Airmar, it should come with 2 wedges to match the transom angle. Hard to see, but the angle looks too steep.
just dhu it

transducer
JNG whats wrong with your transducer , it appears to be a bit high as you do have a very deep vee transom and you may get air under the trnsducer at certain times but is the sounder( brand) not working well. with that dead rise i would have gone down further on the transom and also drop the unit into the water more

you will be sucking in
you will be sucking in bubbles ( cavitation) from the chime to the right of it at that height
I'd drop the tranducer about 50mm and angle it slighty down off the horizontal plane at the back,
I had a simular issue with the unit on my Trophy, also because of a chime right next to it.
As for Port and Starboard, in theory you don't want prop wash coming back towards the transducer, but it's more of an issue when the motor and transducer are very close together or in twin motor set-ups.
How I got mine right in the end was to launch at Hillaries, and use the calm beach area to jump over the side and adjust the angle, then go out do a route to check the image at different speeds and turning left and right... etc, then adjust again... etc, it took me about two hours, but ended up with a good set set-up.PS get an an adjustable spanner with a
Allen keys etc all on it and connect a safety cord to it, nothing like looking for the spanner when you drop it in the drink...lol Also a straight edge and protractor helps set up the angle.
good luck

placement!
The prop cup creates noise at high rpm and can interfere with the transducer frequency. Thats the main reason for the starboard recomendation as its reduced on that side, doesnt happen on all boats however.
Looks fine from what i can see Justin in your pics. You can slightly adjust up or down a smidge when the screws are backed off "if" required. Give it a run first and look at any potential issue "if" it arises.

Thanks for all the info
Thanks for all the info guys.
Will try moving it just a little closer to the keel of the boat. Tim has the exact same boat and will try place it at the same position as his.
I think what is actually happening is that at low speed the water level is alot higher therefore giving clearer picture. As soon as i get the boat to plane the tranducer is nearly out of the water (bubbles) , Causing it to loose bottom.
Thanks Once Again

Olf farts is in the hull
and no problems reading at any speed, no distortion or other problems.
