trying to get my trailer rego'd - trailer brake line coating led to it being failed ?
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Thu, 2016-12-08 09:37
Took my 2 year old Mackay trailer over a rego workshop today - they failed it because the outer clear plastic coating on the brake lines is cracked....
under the clear plastic coating is stainless braid, under the braid is the copper brake line. Does anyone one here replace their brake lines every 12 months - because that's about how long the plastic coating takes to crack?

Try a different inspector
Sounds like you got a bad inspector...
Did you ask him if it would pass if it had no plastic coating?
Might be better to strip it off if it's possible or replace it with copper only stuff...

Harsh
That seems to be harsh. I would ask them to provide you with the standard stating the plastic coating coating is required.

well my last trailer had
well my last trailer had copper tubing with nothing over it ... pretty hard to strip off and despite being crack it actually is all complete and providing protection from stones etc
I have spoken to Paul at freo trailers - he said no reason why it shouldn't pass unless it is compromised so am going to try a different workshop -

no mate - was central - wont
no mate - was central - wont name them until I get a second opinion! (from the inspectors)
Just a pain in the butt - don't use the trailer really but just want it registered so I can move it around when needed - another 48hr permit bites the dust!

Inspector is a tosser, but
Inspector is a tosser, but guess it wont help you by telling him that. Obviously does not understand the difference between rubber lines and stainless braided lines.
Braided brake line can be purchased with or without the clear coating, which is only there to stop the stainless braid chewing its way through anything that comes near it.
The inner pressure tube is actually teflon/PTFE, not copper. Its biggest enemy is being kinked or the line being pulled at an angle out of the fitting which in time will cause it to kink.
