I spend alot of time looking at boats on the net to pass the time by.

If you could choose any boat you wanted what would it be and why?

Sharkcat for me, one of the new ally Sailfish Shelfrunners. Why? Because down here in Esperance its very rarely calm...you've always got either wind or swell or both to battle against and cats do it so much better in the rough. Ally over glass because its better for beach launching and gravel roads.

9m Abcat- still towable but the ultimate offshore/ marlin chasing fishing vessel. Twin 350hp Yammy 4 strokes. Glass would be nice but would make it too heavy and it would already weigh 4 ton + anyway

Something like this

My ultimate would be 8m air

My ultimate would be 8m air rider with hard cab up front. incredible riding bits of gear and ali to make it a bit lighter to tow around.

followed by a 7m westerberg southerner. A nice looking trailerable boat that handle the rough weather well.

Those boats look like they could handle anything and safe as houses. Twin 250 / 300 Yammies on the back.... Plenty of room, well built.

Big Naiad

Tue, 2012-09-04 17:08

When doing the research for our new rescue boat I came across an article on the delivery of Aucklands new 14.6 metre Naiad Red Lion

During the trip up the east coast at one stage they were down to 10 knots----in 6 metre seas and a huge swell.  We put in a submission and were politely told where to go, 10 metres is as big as you can get without forking out mountains of money that we didn't have.

Tue, 2012-09-04 20:02

best boat i have driven was a 23' haines formula.  it was a water police fast response dive boat built to survey , at about 3/4" thick hull, weighed about 3,100 kgs, had 450 l fuel tanks and 2 x 200hp yamaha outboards.  top speed was 50kts and my fastest time from north mole to phillip rock lights (beam on) was eleven and a half minutes, in a light south easterly...  you could get this boat airbourne and come down stern first every time.  great sea boat and a pretty soft ride considering!  the trade off was (lack of) stability at rest!  that could have been improved with flooding tubes inside the chines, but it couldn't be done within survey, so we just put up with a very unstable boat!

Deflects the spray so well. And with 250hp on a 6m regardless of having a deep V that would fly!

Why would you want to get a little 8 or 10m craft? If money was no objective i'd have a big ass cruiser like greg norman and bascially just live aboard it travelling to all the best dive/fishing locations in the world, fishing/diving/wakeboarding on my many 'tenders'.
