Underwater Cameras

Hi Guys,

Can anyone reccomend a camera for a beginner underwater photographer?

I mostly freedive in 5 - 12m of water.

I wouldnt have a clue where to start with cameras so any advice much appreciated

Cheers

I picked up a waterproof

I picked up a waterproof camera recently so had a look at a few offerings. There are a few compact waterproof cameras out there, but a lot do only 3m or so. One does 5 and one or two do 10m (e.g. the canon d10). I dont think any can go any deeper than that, so if you want to take it to 12, then really you'd need a waterproof casing for your camera (perhaps a bit more reliable if diving deep often with it)?

Olympus Tough-8000, 10

Olympus Tough-8000, 10 meters or 40 meters with optional housing.  Lost mine diving off Lano last week and was able to find it 3 days later - still working no problem after 3 days in salt water without housing (only at 5 meters tough).  Stitching came apart on the dive catch bag.

Cheers for the info guys. was hoping to keep the budget close to $500 so will have a sniff on ebay. I have several olympus digital cameras that i am more than happy with so that might just be the go. 10m should be fine, if not sounds like i can get a case to enable deeper dives.

Was at rottnest on saturday and saw a beautiful western blue devil in a cave, they are awesome fish... would have made a nice photo :)

Olympus

How recent are your olympus cameras? would work out under 500 easy to get a housing rated to 40m if they havent discontinued the housings for those models. i reckon u'd be looking at around 280 or so. u'd also have the option to take them deeper in the future with out having to buy a new setup should the need arise.

about 6 months ago i picked up a canon ixus80 plus housing for $550.Was better than any deal i could find on the net. camera solutions in town i've found had a very wide range of compacts and slimline housings in stock so u can hold and have a look, almost every other shop will have to order housings in as not many stock them
