Unusual catch at Mandurah

Went down to mandurah on wednesday night, thinking of getting some nice yummy crab for dinner and upon reaching there just found out that the season was closed. So, thankfully i brought my rod along so i rigged up my line with long shank size 12 to see what's down there. Manage to catch a few herrings, whittings and silver bream and suddenly bang...my rod was so heavy...cant be another herring, might be a bigger silver bream...lo and behold it's a SALMON. What a good fighter they are!!! First time in my life i caught a salmon and it's the biggest saltwater fish i caught other than stingray. How amazing, it's about 9pm at night, no.12 long shank baited with cut prawn pieces.

Amazing night...

Congrats on the new PB monfsts. I think theres a resident population of juvenile Salmon in the Peel and Harvey estuaries, you can catch them year round.

Thanks guys, it's very encouraging to read your compliments/reply. =D I just started fishing about 6 months ago and am getting more and more excited about it.

I just ate the fish tonight, I wrapped it in the foil and leave it at the bbq to cook.

I seasoned it with some pre-made sea salt + smoke spices given by my aunt. It's yummy....

Salmon trout!

They come and go at the Old Traffic Bridge. These last couple weeks have been outstanding for them...2 inch softies in a neutral colour with maybe a 1/8 jighead are the go, casted into the tide so it drifts back under the bridge.

Last year was terrible, never caught one there at all...year before was fantastic, 10-12 fish every session, up to 37cm.

Remember, they ARE actually juvenile salmon, so the bag limit of 4 and size limit of 30cm applies...met some people there recently who seemed to think they could keep eight fish or thought they were just big herring.

Thanks Auslobster for the info. I have to agree with you because at first i thought it was a bull herring!! Thank God i have another friend who has fished for quite some time there to actually tell me that it's a Salmon! Yeah, we did measure it with the Fisheries measuring tape/stickers and it's 34cm but i didnt know the limit was four. Well, i only manage to catch one which is good enough for me already. Thanks for tip about the soft plastic technique! Cheers!

Be prepared, because a much bigger one is likely to jump on your line soon down that way.
