Sunbeam

Thu, 2009-02-19 16:35

Hey roberta

I got the sunbeam one as a chrissy present so i can't really tell ya wat was paid for it, but its prob the best(most used) present i've had for years, i think it was from kambo's prob around the same price. The bags that come with it are i think prob 20cmx25cm but you can also buy extra  rolls 20cmx 6.7m so even tho your restricted to 20cm width u can make them as long as u like for larger fillets and such. ya can get boxes of 2 rolls of the longer ones for $27

we have the sunbeam too

I think it's less than $200 now and uses bags or rolls they work out about the same price if you make the roll bags the same size as the ready made ones. Rodrat has a new one he got from the good guys and you can reuse the bags over and over as they are zip lock at one end and the sealing part is just a series of small circles around the bag you just use a different one each time,it's only small too, looks like it will be very cost efective

To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!

question Bob's never frozen cooked crabs, have any of you frozen cooked cleaned crabs in the food saver as mitch as called them?  Do they taste the same as fresh, crabs are the only thing we haven't frozen for later consumption.

thanks again

vac pac

Thu, 2009-02-19 17:57

Hello Roberta , The Good Guys Rockingham sell them for about $150 ,make sure you beat them done in price for cash, also buy the one that seals a 300mm wide bag ,they are simply more versitile than the smaller one. I have one and it has vac down heaps  including a whole steer. Also you will find the bags much cheaper at MBL [Master Butchers Ltd] over at Bannister Rd Canning Vale .I dought vac packing crabs will help the quality as the problem lays with the -18 temp  of the meat. They tend to go mushie after freezing. Cheers Roberta, 22ppc

yes the bigger one we were looking as when Bob fillets fish just takes the whole fillet off leaves the skin/wings on and if you get a big dhuie need big vac bags.

Like out wide said the ones

Thu, 2009-02-19 22:00

Like out wide said the ones that do the wider bags are more versatile than the small ones. What he said about bags is spot on to. Mate got one off ebay a while ago and had some trouble with it then went through hell trying to get a refund. Others I know have had no drama like Brenz. I use my brothers which is a Hallmark, used heaps and still works a treat.

Sunbeam

Thu, 2009-02-19 23:20

Sunbeam is the way to go. We vac packed all fillets last trip to Exmouth and the flavour and texture of the fillets was sensational. also reduces freezer burn and reduces space in the freezer. i highly recommend the Sunbeam unit. You can buy the rools of bags and cut it to required size.

Rosco/Faulhtner family ... yes thats what we are trying to avoid freezer burn/taste as we eat fish but not quick enough and I buy meat in bulk same thing bloody freezer burn

bluebagger...yes getting the 300mm one

brenz/mitch ...  unfortunately can't buy anything off of ebay as we've never had credit cards etc

reefmonkey/fishy fingers/outwide/garbo ..... thank you will get the 300mm one and it looks like sunbeam has won hands down

As I earlier stated I love good quality European meat (which I get at Spearwood Markets...European butcher down from go nuts) and some meats don't freeze well, so at least by vacuum sealing I can keep the cold meat in the fridge for the time we are in Leeman. Always cook to much, have to get out take away containers (take up room in esky when we go away also), so now I'll be sucking them up in a bag ha ha

I'll let you all now how I go

Regards ...  Roberta

Ordered a cheapy vac sealer and bags and rolls off ebay last night....thanks Roberta for prompting me to get one with your post!

Will see how it goes and will post up results in a cpl weeks. I have quite often looked at the sunbeam one and the ebay ones... for $66 it's worth a shot!

Vacuum packs

Wed, 2009-04-15 09:19

I always take mine with me on holiday.  It keeps the fillets nice and flat and it is better to pack a days catch at the end of the day rather than a holiday's total catch when you have got it home already frozen.
