Vibes and jigs for Exmouth

 Hi all

Heading to Exmouth and the Mackerel Islands next month. Will be mostly sportfishing but will chase some good eating fish for while we're there and I want that to be fun too. Keen to do a bit of jigging and try some vibes in pretty shallow water too. The PE3 outfit I have is not a jigging rod so I imagine slow pitch jigs would be the go? Any advice on jigs and vibes to 100g would be much appreciated.

Without a doubt.

A mate we caught up with in Exmouth got a coronation trout on one on the only day they went out. Got a Hoo and a Coro and headed in.

We did ok on squid on 6/0 hooks which was also cheaper shark jewlery.

The sharks are the bit I'm

Fri, 2022-09-02 12:46

The sharks are the bit I'm not looking forward to. I don't mind donating piercings so long as I get some fish along the way! Just hate wasted fish. One of our guys is a very keen diver so we may let him spear the good eating fish and we'll just do fun stuff.

We smashed it with vibes earlier in the year

Thu, 2022-09-01 17:23

For a northwest trip, just buy the cheap eBay ones and then upgrade the treble hooks. We got some big trout, spanglies, rankin etc all in relatively shallow water on vibes. Just work the bottom couple of metres and you should be good. Most fish hit them when on the drop back down. A good 4000 size spin reel, pe2 or 3 rod is the go. Leader wise about 50lb was good.

Fri, 2022-09-02 11:55

Scano what size/weight vibes were you using? Sounds like much the same type of fishing that we'll be doing.

Octa jig another option

Thu, 2022-09-01 18:01

I've done a little at Ningaloo and north to Rankin Bank. Basic jigs with decent hooks got the job done, sometimes with a strip bait sweetener.Cheapest option. I also played around with those Octa type jigs with the little tail strips and they did well on trout in 30-40m for me at Rankin Bank and 15-20 along the front of Ningaloo. Only small hooks on the Shimano ones I used, but strong and usually both hooks connected.

 Thanks for the responses

Fri, 2022-09-02 10:59

Thanks for the responses fellas. Reefsta - I've got a bunch of Octa jigs that I bought for Shark Bay trip that ended up being landbased so I'll take those. I'll pick up some cheap vibes and upgrade the trebles. Thanks Scano. Common message Markie is cheap jigs and good hooks. I'm gonna grab some of Big John's jigs too thanks Unc.

Planning to make this an artificals only trip, except skipping gardies for small blacks. My mate has released 2 blacks and two sails and missed the same in 4 trips out in the last week.

I've been using mackdog jigs lately. Similar to bottom meats, but about half price, and with better hooks.

Yeah I've been in touch with

Sat, 2022-09-03 11:06

Yeah I've been in touch with them. Got cheap vibes with good hooks too. They're low on 115mm vibes but they're getting them in coral trout pattern at the end of the month. Might get vibes, jigs and baited jigs from them. I like supporting small local businesses too.
