Warning to Boaties/Idiots on the water - busy weekend for rescue services
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/14031887/warning-to-boaties-after-rescues/
First call Saturday (11.30am) for EPIRB alert 15nm off Hillarys. Dispatch both vessels at speed. On the way out 3 people picked up out the water by RAC chopper. When we arrive find Cat under water with bow just showing.
The next hour was spent trying to get it back on 2 hulls for towing. had some success but not all the way.
Towed the vessel to Thompsons Bay in the hope we could refloat.
We were able to get with 20mtrs of the beach with Rangers assistance but unable to refloat as transom door not sealed and believe water had got into the hulls which we could no access.
This picture was when further out.
Inspection found a lot of gear still in the boat including tackle boxes and high end rod/reels.
Got home around 7.00pm
Second call
Saturday night 9.30pm get a call re multiple flare sighting north off Rotto. 5 rescue vessels and 2 choppers dispatched. On the way out advised a vessel had located the vessel in distress.
Short story is that person on the vessel broken down about 10nm off Ocean Reef called his father around 6.00pm to advise he had broken down. Father launches his boat and decides to go and get him. Whilst looking for him (dark by now) sons mobile runds out of battery. Son decides to let off flares. No one had been advised of this, so that is why full resources launched.
Only found this out after we escorted both vessel to Ocean Reef. Both vessels were at this point under power. Distressed vessel had battery problems.
When I explained the situation the the father he did not careand wondered what all the fuss was about.
Got home at 1.30am and not a happy chappy.
On all completed an additional 3 rescue.

Good job. I do often wonder
Good job. I do often wonder when seeing people struggling to start boats at the ramp, what makes them think it will be any different trying to get home later in the day?

ditto
when your parked there and see someone launch then park car, up goes the bonnet and they come down carrying a battery.....
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Marine Rescue
Well done iceman, you guys provide an invaluable service to all of us fishos. We tend to take for granted that the service will be there when we most need it, and sometimes get a bit frustrated when we are asked all the questions when we log in and dont realise that it is for our own safety. So again thank you from the rest of us for the great job that you do, you are appreciated by the bulk of the boating fraternity.
Cheers
Old Banga!

Well done
Well done to the crews down south.
We got a callout that a pro mackie boat had broken down on the outside of Dorre island and the fishing charter vessel Top Gun 2 was heading down to render assistance. They picked up the boat down towards Cape St Crique on the bottom of Dorre island and were towing it up to the Gap where they would meet up with our boat to tow in in from there, a distance of around 30nm and in to some pretty nasty seas whipped up by 22-25 knot NE winds.
They set off at 1300 and arrived back safely at 1700 with all in good spirits. The broken down boat had chopped out bearings in its leg and uni's by the sound of it and were grateful for the tow.

Does anyone know the details
of how the cat ended up upside down? As a cat owner I'm always interested in what happened.

Not the only one
We had one go over recently up here, a near new 23 footer, came over top of a wave, dropped a hull in to the trough and cartwheeled tossing 2 of the 3 on board in to the drink and trapped the skipper in under the bimmi. Wasn't too rough or in a following sea.
The boat is still out there somewhere, they towed it in towards shore but ran out of crew from seasickness, anchored it, put marker buoys on it and left it. They returned 3 hours later and it was gone, grid searched for hours with no success.

Sorry for the ignorance
How the hell does a cat of that size capsize !
I am not pointing the finger at these guys and do not wish to offend and do not know any of the circumstances, but how does this so frequntly happen ?
I know mother nature plays a big factor and no matter what planning or otherwise - boats do break down, but in all my years of boating I have been incident free - touch wood !!
I make sure I have all safety equipment, boat is top notch and never stop learning from others !
Do these guys have to pay sea rescue for the assistance that was given ?
I also think you guys do an invaluable service and get nowhere near the recognition you deserve..

Reason for capsize
On the news that night owner said they were swamped by a wave over the back. Could not see how this would happen as the transom was quite high. Rear door was not sealed.
One theory is they were travelling at speed (seen by another vessel) and they caught a pro cray pot as there were a number of pots in the area. This either caused the stern to be pulled down into the water or vessel stopped so abruptly that the following wash came over the back. May have also dislodged the engine (inboard) from the hull. could not see when beached. May have been a number of things. Normally a cat will float with hulls out the water but water had got into the hulls so iether not sealed deck or damage to transom.
Conditions were quite good out there with half meter seas at most.

Iceman you'd be surprised by
Iceman you'd be surprised by just how many people like to reverse into seas. I water test boats daily with clients and so many (mostly the experts. rolls eyes) will stop the boat and start reversing into a sea. When i ask them why would they want to do it they all have the same blank look on there face. If its a self draining deck i will sometimes let them keep going until they get wet feet. Boats are built to go forwards..
I know you can reverse on to fish but in that case lift your engine up so that the prop pulls the boat up and obviously be careful not to get swamped.
Another big cause for boats sinking is people who have self draining decks that then have hatches in floors that aren't sealed.
I was involved with the Coroner many years ago on a cat that suck causing death. The deck was full self draining but had no seal around two massive deck hatches.
