We Could Have Been Champions

Lots of us are passionate about our sport and (I assume) most of us are past our prime. I had to go for an injection for a bulging C6 yesterday and at 37 have to learn to moderate my activities going forward so going with the theme "the older we get, the better we were" I'd be interested to hear about some of the sporting achievements of the lads on here.

Funny enough I was at a conference hosted at the Karrinyup Country Club today and one of the attendees has kids there and up until they were around 10 or so it was costing him $7k a year per kid and next year it's going to cost him $10k per year and that's just the club fees!!!

Safe to say I'd be able to chase down a cane toad with my gamie knee and bend over with my dodgy back to get a good pic if the situation presented

Fri, 2018-03-16 20:41

Used to race a few enduros back in my younger days. Turned 35 and was convinced I was as good as I used to be and made a comeback into the Veterans class desert racing.

Debut in Indee 500 Ironman a couple of years ago. Turns out I wasn’t as good as I once was and did some permanent damage in the nerves of my left elbow.

Other than that its just Billfish comps. Done ok in a few of them.

Fri, 2018-03-16 20:42

My main sport growing up was footy and I played in the East Perth development squad from 13s to 16s as a starting rover and tried out for Subi colts (changed zones) in 98 but pulled out due to a new job but doubt I'd have made the final cut as my group went on to win multiple WAFL premierships. Gave it up and played a season in 2001 for Gin Gin before tearing my meniscus in the 2002 pre season and had another long break and came back in 2013 to play AFL Masters winning best player in my second year only to tear my meniscus the year after and my ACL the year after that and have hung the boots up.

Represented WA in 2004 and 2005 in the National All Styles martial arts tournament making the second round and semis in the kumite.

My favourite achievements are my long distance running in my early 30s and self trained (I'd just go out and punch out kms) I finished 47th in the City to Surf 12km at a time of 46:45 and the year before that I did the half marathon and finished 35th with a time of 1:25:36.

Fri, 2018-03-16 20:53

Not sport but was apparently pretty  good at drawing through my school years, used to sell a few of them lol. Should'a gone on with it but the old man was old school and more interested in us getting a 'normal job' "University! what the hell for! He once said to me when I mentioned it. So just lost interest and bailed from school at year 10. Did play a lot of soccer and cricket  in my early years before getting into footy.

 Arthritis in both hands

Fri, 2018-03-16 21:01

Arthritis in both hands since early thirties from boxing from a ten year old to late teens....was crap and pretty slow looking back and definitely got more handed my way than I handed out....thought I was pretty hard at the time thou haha

was a reasonable rugby player, state rep, scholarship all that rubbish but burnt out by early twenties from playing and training half a dozen times a week from primary school...went back to play in early thirties cause thought I would still have “it” pretty sure now I prob never did have it at all....especially when ending up with a shoulder reconstruction after my fourth game back.....dick head!

Told some good stories about how good I was thou.....pretty sure the kids are sick of it!

I played almost everything that was around at the time, obviously Aussie rules was my game until I done my ACL at 20. Done little athletics as a kid, Played cricket in the off seasons and a shit load of indoor cricket, 3 and 4 nights a week. Indoor cricket originally kicked off in Fremantle and then they started playing games at the Phoenix Hotel when the South Fremantle footy club owned it. That was something. I think I probably would have played lacrosse as my Aunty and her bf who ended up her hubby both played the game, especially her hubby who went all the way in the game, including being in the world allstars team a few times. But I digress, I’m paying big time these days, knees rooted, both need rebuilds, ankles, shoulders give me curry from time to time, I’m just an arthritic old bugger now.

Another ex golfer here

Sat, 2018-03-17 11:29

Started playing golf during my high school years and was playing off a 3 handicap after a few years.  Considered pursuing a career in golf but the parents said get some qualifications first and return to golf later if you wish.  Didn't play for 5 or 6 years and returned to play weekend golf once qualified.  Managed to get the handicap down to scratch for a time but gave the game away when I came to Aust in 1980.

Sprinting was my thing back

Sat, 2018-03-17 12:38

Sprinting was my thing back in highschool.

Ran a 10.7sec 100m and a 22.3sec 200m at the age of 14 with the Delhi and London games in my sights, but track wasnt a very glamorous sport and it was bloody expensive to keep at it with events around Aus and training 4hrs a day 6 days a week so gave it away at 16.

I was never going to be a champion sportsman unfortunately

Sat, 2018-03-17 14:28

I did play in a grand final winning team for the Manning Junior Footy Club under 13's reserves team way back, but gave the footy away after that coz I was too skinny and had no talent lol.

Hockey was big at Como High, as we had Graeme Worth as the Phys Ed teacher (played for WA), so I got into that at 14 and played for YMCA Perth up to about 27 before losing interest. Only one grand final win during that time and never played anywhere near the top level.

Tried golf for a while, but was shit at that too!

I make a good spectator I think and I have more time to focus on fishing (Not that I fish much these days ).

 Played local Rugby League

Sat, 2018-03-17 15:12

Played local Rugby League for years...managed a Queensland trip with the U15 state school boys team, then made the U17 development squad for the Western Reds training at the WACA gym back then...but in the end lacked a bit of speed for the backs and was late to fill out so size was lacking for the forwards....didnt really have the parent support.......Played right through to first grade for years...few knee recons...there still phuked.

Competed in amuteur boxing for about four years....lost more than i won but loved every minute of it, came close to an open class state title in light heavy but after buying my first house and the girlfriend getting pregnant gave it away...couched down at a Spearwood gym by Milo's...the bloke that put the machete in the cop's head down Rocko late last year.

Played junior cricket at Kardinya...made the district side for Melville playing turf...pretty quick bowler apparrently but gave that up.

Still playing competition Darts now...had a ten year break after starting at 17-18...played with and against young Kyle Anderson and his brother, Kyle still playing with the best in the world atm.....A-reserve grade atm with a shit Av due to work commitments.

All my effort and coin now go's into my daughter and her ballet dreams...she been all over the world, mostly solo, Canada Winnipeg and Houston Ballet company last year at 14.....just done 4 day trip to Hamberg ballet company solo and is off to the Royal Ballet and English national in April for auditions before transferring straight to New York for the Prestigious YAGP...Youth American Grand Prix...1 of only 2 Australians selected to compete from the Video audition rounds....West Australian had an article on her about a month back.

Hoping she can gain a full time spot in a professional company.

I haven't played since the day I bought my dinghy and was playing weekly. Really should seeing as I upgraded all my irons, my putter and my fairway driver at a significant cost a few months earlier.

I generally hit one good shot/put per hole with pure rubbish around it and consider a par and a couple of bogeys a 'pretty good round'.
