Weekend Tailor
Submitted by beau on Mon, 2012-11-05 13:10
Had to get out for a fish over the weekend despite the conditions before going back to work for a month. First spot we accidentally spooked a roo off the rocks into the water, scared the shit out of us, tide was racing out but he/she eventually clampered up the rocks and back into the bush. 2nd spot we had to dodge the showers and run out onto the reef while we could. 1st cast produced a nice 45cm tailor and the video below is of the second fish i caught. Try and watch the vid in highest quality available.

You wouldn't usually find me
You wouldn't usually find me out in that weather but I was desperate for my fix, and the low tide and 1m swell meant I could nearly walk out to the ledge, the soles of my feet were still killing me the next day though.

Sure didnt, nearly snapped
Sure didnt, nearly snapped the tip of my nitro when he did that U turn through my legs. I hooked him right on the edge of the reef and a wave picked him up and dumped him onto the reef so he was green all the way to the beach.
Strange how theres never any fish in winter there though, I wouldn't mind some 60cm+ fish. Fly gear next time :)

Hey dan, retrieve at a medium
Hey dan, retrieve at a medium to fast pace with a highish rod tip to get the plug skipping on or just below the surface. The tail end of the lure should have a nice side to side wiggle action. If the fish are really fired up I usually reel as fast as I possibly can and enjoy the show watching big tailor explode completely out of the water with the lure in its mouth.
If the weather is any good next time I'm home I'll get some video on how I catch tailor, the run should be in full swing by then

Yep , its the tailor dance
Haha , sorry to laugh mate , but it did look funny, nice catch in tough conditions.
Some of the best tailor fishing Ive had has been in cyclone type conditions, but man
you must get some rockboots , they save your feet so much and keep them warm too!
My tecnique for landing big tailor on reefs, learnt after loosing a few is to swing them up on the leader
against my thigh , and against the plastic shoulder bag I wear, them you pin them behind the head with hand ready for bleeding.
Barely ever lost 1 doing this, but I always check to see that there hooked well.
cheers.

I'm definitely not a shoe
I'm definitely not a shoe person! With size 14+ feet I've had to wear ill-fitting footwear all my life, every chance I get I'm barefooted lol. Never found booties big enough to fit and to compensate for when they shrink in the water
